WireDog's photos: Iraq: Soldier relaxing atop vehicle

This picture was taken during the brief "honeymoon" phase after the invasion. We were taking turns gong into a shops in downtown Baghdad just days before the insurgency began to attack us on the streets.

He is relaxed, looking forward to going home soon, helmet off, weapon pointed down. The Iraqis welcomed us at the time of this photo and thanked us for deposing their tyrannical leader. Soldiers all over Iraq were exploring the villages and enjoying the glow of having succeeded.

It ended abruptly as relaxed soldiers began to get stabbed and gunned down on the streets, and the next phase of that war started in earnest.
