Peegoo's photos: Fret Files: 'safed' file edges...and file handles

Commercial file handles are too large for fret work. I make file handles from commercially-available dowels 1/2" in diameter x 1.5" long. The little dowel flutes are designed to hold glue. But as handles, they are perfect because they provide an ideal grip surface for the kind of control and precision necessary for this kind of work.

Grind and polish a hemispherical 'bull nose' on all your fret files (and nut files too). No matter how careful you are, the jagged factory nose on a file will dig into wood or finish and it will ruin your day, I guarantee.
