This is how I repair tears in speakers. I use thin, black construction paper and put wood glue on one side and place it over the tear. Apply pressure from both side to work out excess glue and wipe it off. This method has worked for me for 30 years and it is not messy looking like paper towel or coffee filters or any of that other stuff. I have also used the "black" part of a newspaper picture and that works good too.
