Costco did drop their price as predicted yesterday but they went back to $1.62 today. I note that the other brand name stations are making their best effort to raise prices. So locally, our low is $1.60 today and $2.10 at a couple Shell and Chevron stations (these latter stations never having fallen below $2 in the last couple months),

Prices have been climbing rapidly. Costco is a $1.94 today. I bought gas Thursday for $1.86. In about two weeks, Costco raised their price 32 cents.

A Costco gas attendant claimed we don't switch in Idaho. Not sure if that's correct.

All areas switch, winter blends are more volatile, in other words they evaporate more easily. If they used winter blends in the summer you would have vapor lock trouble.

(The vapors burn, not the liquid)

However with the majority of cars using fuel injection that is not a real problem any more. But the EPA doesn't like the vapors, so we still get summer blends.

Filled up for $1.95 last night in Madison.

It's always a dime or so cheaper here than in Milwaukee.

$2.799/gal for 87 octane at my Chevron last night. Can anybody beat San Diego for the highest gas prices in the US?

I was in Mesa, Arizona for my mom's birthday at the beginning of February. I thought I'd received a "killer" deal when I filled up for $1.73/gallon at a Circle-K. Within a week in was down to $1.55.

Eventually, I'm told, it got down to $1.39, before heading northward. $2.09/gallon, today, at the same station.

Here, in Las Vegas, my "go to" station is an ARCO where price per gallon for 87 octane never went below about $1.85/gallon during the same time period. As of today it has bounced to $2.29/gallon.

Not quite the 35% swing in Mesa but, still, a sizeable price jump in a short period of time.

I've *read* the price increase is due to maintenance at California refineries. I have my (serious) doubts about that excuse.

JDC, that could be true. I don't keep up with the industry anymore but we do have too few refineries for our demand.

So when one or more go down the result is higher prices, since the others cannot make up the difference.

K4

That sounds reasonable since, after researching a little, I found there was a major explosion in the Torrance refinery in mid February.

The initial expense, meeting the environmental requirements, the years to get proper permits and the fact that people would rather not have a refinery built anywhere near their residences are probably good reasons why the current refineries are old and have age related issues that compromise the gas supply.

Quik Trip is up to $2.05 this morning. Costco is still at $1.74 but probably not for long.

And Costco just bumped it up to $1.79. Still a bargain compared to everyone else. We all knew it wouldn't last, right!

Costco dropped to $1.96 but all the other stations are racing to see who can raise prices the fastest. Costco will follow quickly.
