+1 what Pinetree said

I just bought a new Telecaster Elite for just over $1500. My favorite Tele I have ever owned. Plays superb, Fit and finish like a custom shop model. Love the noiseless pickups.

My 2005 MIM standard Tele is my favorite guitar. She's a little heavy and getting a bit worn, but she's got it where it counts.

Classic MIM teles are good. Bajas are good if you can get a lighter one, say around 7.5 lbs. road worn are nice as well. I built a parts caster Tele with nitro neck, body, Nocaster pups, Rutter saddle, bridge from a 60s Tele, and a few other parts including 4 way switch. Have about $1000 in it including assembly and set up by luthier. Great guitar. Huge neck, close to a baseball bat. Bigger than my nocaster neck.
