Is there a tone knob connected to the bridge pickup? That is the best mod (and easy, of course) that I did to my latest Strat acquisition, a Robert Cray. Without the mod, the bridge pickup was unusable, for me anyway.

I normally pull the claw down on my strat to where the bridge sits on the body, this adds mid-range to my ears. Tuning to e-flat with heavier strings again will provide a darker sound with more mid-range, but big strings aren't necessary. Likewise, as others said, lower pickup height will give a smoother sound.

This is the general format I use for my strats, e-flat, .ll gauge strings, bridge on body, low pickup height. It works for me, and makes overdrive sound far less brash and harsh.
