In 1895 the bicycle was seen as an instrument of feminism ... women were to be dissuaded from bike riding at all costs. Thus .....

"Over-exertion, the upright position on the wheel, and the unconscious effort to maintain one's balance tend to produce a wearied and exhausted 'bicycle face,'" noted the Literary Digest in 1895. It went on to describe the condition: "usually flushed, but sometimes pale, often with lips more or less drawn, and the beginning of dark shadows under the eyes, and always with an expression of weariness." Elsewhere, others said the condition was "characterized by a hard, clenched jaw and bulging eyes."

Some of the advice given women riders at the time:

Don’t race. Leave that to the scorchers.

Don’t go to church in your bicycle costume.

Don’t chew gum. Exercise your jaws in private.

Don’t ask, “What do you think of my bloomers?”

Don’t scream if you meet a cow. If she sees you first, she will run.

That device I'm sure was used on places other than the face. Clenched jaw? Yeah, I would think so!

Go tell her she does, if she punches you, she disagrees.
