He was 89 and fiercely independent and self sufficient until the end.

Very sorry to hear that. Yes, it is very a difficult tragedy to comprehend and deal with. Be thankful for the times you had together. Mojo to you and your family.

Unfortunately, Iâm alone in my dadâs house. My wife is flying in tomorrow. His dog is keeping me company at least.

I have an older sister but sheâs a Canadian citizen with severe mental health issues. Sheâs been basically missing in action for several years.

"He was 89 and fiercely independent and self sufficient until the end."

That's no small thing. That's doubtless how he wanted it.

Mine passed in '92 and I still think of him.

Often.

The pain subsides as you come to terms with the loss, but you still miss them.

Strength to you and yours during this difficult adjustment period, my friend. Loss of such a key figure in your frame of reference can be very disorienting.

BTW: after mine passed, I found it therapeutic to write down his biographical info (loss of his own father early in life, struggling through the Great Depression, WWII combat experiences). I've passed it on to my kids so they'll appreciate him and know what kind of a man he was. Made me feel a little better that I'd done something that may help to insure that he won't be forgotten.
