Life makes a man tired.

My much-loved PV Vypyr 75 died yesterday. The rotary decoders have been getting iffy for some time. Yesterday the amp starting to lose models while playing. This has been my plug-and-play amp for years now. I found it and a Sanpera footswitch for cheap on CL years ago.

I started out the TransTube journey around 2008 with a Bandit. With a speaker swap (always a speaker swap!) it really floated my boat. A couple years later I found this used Vypyr 75 cheap on CL with its Sanpera I controller. I also put a different speaker in it for vast improvement.

So I'm looking through my favorite music store today - hunting for the next plug-and-play amp - when I find an extremely new-looking Peavey Special 212 Chorus combo. It's from the same TransTube series as my Bandit back in '08 - that being the current series. I mean, not a mark or any dust on it. Brand new manual, etc. in the bag in the back of the amp. I grab a guitar and give it a try.

The first thing you have to do with these is listen past the Blue Marvel speakers. There's a reason why their initials are BM. Seriously. Weak bottom and and ice-picky highs. Worst guitar speaker I know. YMMV, etc. :-)

Any ways. it's marked "consignment" and that is marked though and it is re-marked "used." They want $299. I ask them what the "cash today" price is. $249. Sold! And I bought a new PV footswitch for it for $19.

Got it home and immediately took the BMs out (BM always goes out!) and installed an Eminence EM12 and a Texas Heat in it.

This thing sounds excellent! It's bigger than I really wanted, but I just couldn't pass it up.

Great find. Congrats on the new to you amp. Sounds mint.

My son's amp for years now has been a Vyper 75. Bought it for him as a Christmas gift when he was still living at home.

He was crazy for the looper.

Peavey gear is almost always top notch. You might contact them. They would probably offer to repair the Vyper (for a fee) I've contacted them several times over the years.

PeAcE

Peavey factory service is excellent. Reasonably priced, fast, and reliable.

I might ship the chassis off. Actually, I might try some DeOxit in the decoders. What can it hurt at this point?

I seriously dig this new amp.

The shop owner said when the guy brought it in to trade he asked him if he ever played it. He said he did a little when he bought it and then put a towel over it and never touched it again. It is pretty much NOS.

Cool! You made a good choice. I had the smallest VYPYR and it died within a year. Also, it had some weird artifacts in the note decay that I couldn't dial out.

I'm back to all analog with this purchase.

This amp has analog chorus and spring reverb. And TransTube is, of course, analog. It has a tiny reverb tank. I'll research and find a longer replacement tank. I did that several years ago on a Valve King 50w combo with very nice results. Reverb tanks are cheap.

I dialed up the clean channel for a nice warm scooped tone yesterday. It is, absolutely, the best Strat tone I have had since I had a tube half-stack.

The EM12 and the Texas Heat are a great match in the amp. The EM12 came out of the Vypyr and the TH I had stashed away in a box from the time I took it out of the Vypyr. It was the original replacement for the BM that came in the amp.

The shop had the new Vypyr line - except for the smallest model - the model I was inclined to buy. In the end I'm glad it worked out this way.

I ordered a long reverb pan to replace the short two-spring pan in the amp. As it is the reverb ain’t much to write home about. I’ve done this mod on a Peavey ValveKing combo before with great results.

Swapped the tank out today. Not as big a difference as I had noticed in past tank swaps. But it is better reverb.

Really loving this amp. I took the opportunity to *crank* it with my LP today. It sounds glorious.

I've had some sort of TransTube amp for more than 10 years now. I'm glad to be back to all-analog. They Vypyr was nice while it lasted.
