Hi I'm Looking for sweeter tone from my Strat.<br /> Currently have Hot Noiseless set in my HWY1 Strat and I'm a bit over them. I do want reverse wound middle, true single coils and aged white plastics, (to match with a parchment guard). <br /> They're my only non negotiable's. <br /> <br /> Open to all suggestions but wanted a complete set. (i.e. not mixing models and makes.) <br /> Thanks. I cannot afford boutiquey stuff. Tonerider's are sort of close, but have no aged white options I believe. Maybe Wilkinson's? I dunno.

I like Sullivan pups, SME is the brand name. Check YT for some sounds, he can do whatever you want and they run about 80 bucks a set. I have bought 3 sets for my strats and they are very nice.

"...Tonerider's are sort of close, but have no aged white options I believe..."<br /> <br /> Aftermarket Strat pickup covers in any color you want are widely and easily available (amazon, eBay, Reverb, etc.). You just have to know what pole piece spacing your pickups are.

I have a set of American Standard pickups in my FSR Strat, and they are awesome, overflowing with stratfulness.<br /> and you can probably get them used cheap.<br /> mp

What do you not like about the Hot Noiseless?<br />

"What do you not like about the Hot Noiseless?"<br /> <br /> I recently had the opportunity to A-B mine with an American standard loaded with Am Std PUPS Circa 2010 I believe (they are not noiseless) and I noticed a broader frequency range and generally they sounded (for want of a better adjective) more Musical.<br /> <br /> Hard to define, but my HN PUPS sounded rather anemic by comparison.

What pot values did you use with the HN's?<br /> <br /> I have VN's and use the standard 250k pots. They sound very good to my ear and bright enough that I never considered going to the 1M (T) & 500K (V) that come with them. But that might make the difference with the Hot's. Dunno.<br /> <br /> Also, have tried playing that strat using a compressor or EQ pedal?<br />

Thanks for your suggestions Mick. I just used the standard pots 250k I believe. The HN's don't come with any pots anyway. They don't sound atrocious, but I think I can do better. May try those Toneriders.

"May try those Toneriders."<br /> <br /> I don't think you'd be disappointed. There's a range of models to choose from depending on the sound you're after. I've heard good things about the City Limits, but have only used the Classic Blues personally. (for strat that is)<br /> <br /> The dealer with the best price is in Canberra. Checkout the TR dealer page for details.<br /> I've dealt with that shop and Steve was great to deal with.<br />

Late to the party here but I've been enjoying The VanZandt PUs lately. The standard vintage and the blues set are outstanding. They may be hard to get in OZ.<br /> <br /> IMO the hot noiseless lack a bit of mids. Pot changes really can't get that back.

May I recommend that, before you pull the trigger, you check out Rumplestiltskin Custom Pickups. Aaron, who formed the company, is an FDRer. I have always been very satisfied with his offerings.

You could consider Lace Hot Golds, which are available with cream and mint covers. True single coils, with greatly reduced noise, and I think you can buy sets with a RWRP middle pickup. I've had a set for many years and think they're fantastic, but I recognize they don't completely duplicate traditional Strat tone. If you like Townshend's live tone with his old Clapton signature Strats that have Lace's original Gold Sensors, you'd probably dig the Hot Golds.

Fender CS54s or Van Zandt Vintage +. I've tried a ton of them and these are my favorites.
