Good comparison video. Well thought out & executed with as many variables removed as possible.
I hate it when you get apple & orange videos.

I think there are heaps of very good "cheap" pickup options available nowadays.
Just a few examples are (no particular order) Tonerider; Parson Street; GFS.

My latest budget pickup experience is with "Duncan Designed" SC-101's. They came stock in a Squier Deluxe Strat I recently acquired and they sound great. No intention or need for "upgrading".

I've been real happy with Tonerider in particular.
Whilst they're not dirt cheap ($119AU) by comparison to what *we* pay here for Fender, SD, Dimarzio pickups, they're an absolute bargain.

I recently bought a set of TR Classic Blues on sale for $99AU just to put in my parts drawer. They'll definitely go into something someday!

Of course it would be remiss not noting that *the player* is still, and always, going to be the biggest factor in the tone equation.
But you knew that...
You cannot tell what they really sound like without being there and then again some guys can make a magnet and a piece of tin foil sound good.

I have a GFS Mean 180 in the neck position of one of my guitars. It's a humbucker that is meant to act like a P-90. It sounds good, but I love it for one unique quality: there are adjustable pole pieces on BOTH COILS. Why don't more pickup makers do this?!? You can really dial in the tone! At the neck position, the coil nearest the neck is brighter, so you can really voice each string. Again, why don't more makers do this?!?
