I had thought at first the story would be about a former deputy .... but no, Lawrence Falce, although off duty when attacked following a traffic accident, was still assigned to a black and white patrol car, doing standard police work.

There is no upper age limit for mandatory retirement on the San Bernardino department; deputies can serve as long as they are able, and Deputy Falce said they would have to drag him "kicking and screaming" to get him to retire.

"The job description for deputy lists as recruiting guidelines the ability to climb barriers, jump obstacles, and perform strenuous physical activities (and) control resisting subjects with a minimum of force necessary to effect an arrest."

My hat is off to this dedicated public servant who was doing what he loved up until the day he died. It was said of him that younger deputies couldn't keep up with him. He did search and rescue into his 60's.

The suspect who assaulted Falce was arrested following the after-collision confrontation.

Deputy Falce looks like a tough-as-nails teddy bear of a guy.

It's horrible what happened to him.

Wow, what a loss and what a terrific sounding deputy who was in it to be in it.

Sad news.

My old SO has a deputy who is approaching 70. He's a friend, but I think he's crazy and have told him so.
