As I've mentioned before, I roast coffee. It's a smokey process so I do that in the garage. So, in its own right, the garage often smells quite wonderful.

Over the last week I've worked up a project guitar. A good deal of that work was routing out the body to make room for humbuckers. That is also, obviously, a garage project.

Sawdust and freshly-roasted coffee. It's what heaven smells like - I'm sure of it.

Whatcha' got?

Ever noticed how different woods have different-smelling sawdust? I can easily recognize if oak, teak, or walnut are being worked. Oak, in particular, has a unique, tangy, vinegary smell. Pine and Douglas fir smell similar, but slightly different. Yeah, wood nerd alert is in order.

Years ago when I lived in GA we lost a couple of giant pecan trees. I cut and split them for firewood. In cutting and splitting I found that smell distinctive. And burning it in the fireplace rendered it's own unique smell too. It wasn't a bad thing. But very different from oak. I don't know that I can describe the aromas. But I'd know them if I smelled them again.

This guitar body I was referring to is ash.

Pecan is a common wood for smoking meats
I have some along with cherry, hickory, mesquite and apple
Each is unique and I mix and match depending upon what I cook

So my add is pork on the smoker with 70% hickory, 25% apple and 5% mesquite with a nice cigar and a scotch

That my summer backyard smell
I am missing that right now with the wind chills hovering at zero!

"Ever noticed how different woods have different-smelling sawdust? I can easily recognize if oak, teak, or walnut are being worked."

Maple and Redwood also have distinct odors. Plus Redwood stains your hands purple.
_____________

My favorite odors?

â¢The ocean. I've lived within walking distance of the Pacific for most of my life, so it pretty much recedes into the background most of the time. But when I used to go out to 4 Corners to ride mountain bikes for a couple weeks at a time, on my way home I'd suddenly pick up the scent of the ocean from a few miles inland.

â¢Wheat toast, peanut butter and coffee in the morning. Add bacon on occasion for an added "kick".

â¢Fresh salmon marinated in soy sauce cooking on an oak fire.

â¢That hot tube amp smell mingled with the aroma of a cold beer.

â¢The "Mexican food smell", cumin and corn tortillas definitely being among its dominant elements.

â¢Bananas and vanilla, which are a regular combination (along with other things) every morning in my breakfast smoothie.

Ocean smell ranks up there high with me
Not the dead clams at low tide but the crisp salty fresh smell. Lived at the shore in NJ all my life and sometimes in the morning I can smell the ocean from my house.

Also add because I grew up in the pine barrens the smell of a hot summer day with the sugar sand radiating the heat to the scrub pines and the ensewing hot sap smell that permeates the air. Not christmassy piney -it has its own scent.

I know what you mean--it's a musky/funky pine smell from the deteriorating pine straw on the forest floor. Takes me back to when I was a young 'un, camping in the woods.

At the other end of the aroma spectrum, more like an "odor" combination:

Cigarettes
Avon perfume

My wife used to refuse to buy Avon perfume because she associated it with her late sister use wore Avon perfume and smoked.

I got a really nice leather backpack for Christmas. Itâs in my office and that room now smells like fine leather.

So I *need* a heavy leather apron to wear while Iâm making sawdust in the coffee-scented garage.
