This guitar is my oldest at 20 years and it's heavily-modded with Fralin pups, CTS pots, etc. It needs a new nut and the frets are pretty worn in the first five positions. Also, I'm not a huge fan anymore of the 14" radius. I'm considering taking it to my tech (I don't do nuts) but I'm also considering a different neck.

In checking replacement necks, I'll be in the $300 range. Questions for me to consider:

* Is it worth the repair costs or a new neck?
* If I replaced the neck, would a standard strat neck fit?
* If I look elsewhere for a different guitar, what's a decent strat in the >$500 range?

What would you do?

BTW, this neck is ebony and I believe SS frets.

If it had SS frets you’d have no wear.

I’d say a refret would be good. But if you don’t care for the radius and profile a new neck is the way to go. If a Warmoth neck works on a Carvin body I would go that route and order exactly the neck you want.

Thanks! How good is AllParts?

You might call Warmoth and ask of they know about fit.

I have 2 Allparts necks and like them both. They did take more work than Warmoth or Musikraft.

I’ve never used an AllParts neck. No experience with those.

Does Keisel make a neck?

At a quick glance I see someone from a Warmoth discussion say standard Fender replacement necks fit the Bolt. Take that for what it's worth. The cool thing is you could really get creative with Warmoth, scale and/or headstock-wise. The Carvin headstock is pretty ugly.

IIRC yes. It has also long been common innnerwebs knowledge that a Fender neck would fit a Bolt body.

And the innnerwebs is rarely wrong.

If I need to spend $300 for a neck, maybe I'd take my chances on this (Leftee posted earlier)...

"HEY NOW! :oD"

Well, I'm speaking from my personal experience. I had a TL60T (I believe you did too). Just didn't do it for me.

I agree! Mine is long gone.

I got teased incessantly at FDP jams for my 'pointy guitars'.

Take a pointy guitar to a jam and let the naysayers have their fun.

And then wipe the floor with 'em and their Costume Shop Fenders. That's my policy!

haha

Yep, a Carvin Bolt neck pocket is identical spec as Fender Strat. Get yourself a Warmoth neck with the *exact* specs you like. It will be better playing and better sounding than a duct-tape-and-bubblegum approach using the existing neck.

Thanks, Peegoo. I'll look into a 9" radius.

Does anyone have experience with a compound radius neck?

I’ve got one on my Warmoth Strat build. I like it a lot and would do it again.

To add, it's a "weird" (non-standard) neck that I like... a lot.

Big Strat headstock, 1.75" nut, '50s profile and alloy frets that are gold in color and almost as hard as SS.

Warmoth has in-stock lefty necks that start at $157. And you get to pick your frets and tuner holes.

Thanks, Eric! That's not a bad option. The neck is a standard thin. I prefer a beefier neck but it's no different than my current neck.

Every once in a while a fatter neck profile shows up. Most are the thin c though.
