Hey all-

I'm approaching the end of a years-long mod (yeah, I can work kinda slow!) on a guitar, and while I figured out the general wiring of the pickups, there's still a couple choices to make, and I'm curious what y'all think.

It's basically a tele with a humbucker in the neck position (both single wire and ground, nothing fancy) and a single coil in the bridge position. A volume knob, a tone knob (with push-pull pot) and a four-way rotary switch are the controls.

The rotary will be wired:
Neck pickup on
Neck & Bridge in phase
Neck & Bridge out of phase
Bridge pickup on

Also, the push-pull pot will be wired with two different value capacitors, to open up the tonal possibilities.

My questions are: what value pots should I use for the volume and tone controls? And, what value caps should I use for the p/p tone control? Because it's a combination single coil and humbucker, and because the cap values can be easily changed. I know that I can change them if it doesn't work out very well (caps easier than pots!) but I'm curious what people think would be a good starting point, and one with the best odds for some great sounds.

Thanks!

Im going to advise a 500K pot for both the volume and the tone and if you want two different tone caps you might as well try a .022uf and a .1uf. Wire the caps so they are easy to change if you want to try something different.

Also--flip the phase on the neck humbucker--not the bridge pickup. That will negate having to do brain surgery on the bridge pickup to isolate the ground from the coil.

I would suggest 250k volume and 500k tone pot. It's a nice half-way house betwen 250k and 500k pots, the single coil won't be too bright and the humbucker won't be too dark (though even with two 250k pots a PAF-style humbucker is not too dark anyway).

I'd suggest just one 0.047 µF cap. Just one cap, a second will always be redundant because the bigger value cap will be able to do everything a smaller cap will do, just at a different tone pot setting. I don't think a larger cap is much use because we can already go too dark to my tastes with a 0.047 µF cap. If you really do want a second one, I'd go smaller, say 0.01 µF or less for a more subtle roll off.

Yep. Dr Kev is on the money. The pickups feel both pots when wide open and the cap switching isn't going to be really worth the space it takes up in the control cavity.
