The 1st one I have encountered.

I browsed CL this morning and saw an ad for a Taylor K24ce at a low but understandable "I need money now" price. It was very near my office so I took an early lunch to check it out.

I have to say that if I was a first time Taylor buyer I could have been snowed. The current owner was. God, I hate to think of what he paid for it.

The guitar had a model/serial tag that was a little bit "off" color wise and mounting method. It had LR Baggs e-tronics(maybe also fake)in it but appeared that the Taylor Expression System had been removed with three plugged holes on the upper shoulder. Lots of people do this. There was no oval battery compartment/end pin jack however. This was a dead giveaway. It was a damn good copy and really looked the part except for the little details. It sounded bad, no bottom at all. Only a seasoned player would know this.

The Chinese haven't figured out what the model numbers mean I guess. If they didn't drill the holes for the controls and have stamped K23c on the tag they would have a better chance of ripping folks off. Glad these folds are idiots.

The owner didn't believe me, was shocked and sent photos and ser# to Taylor while I was there. A fake counterfeit guitar was their confirmation.

Be careful out there!

Wow. I've seen fake Gibsons, Fenders, Martins, Gretches... But not a fake Taylor yet. It's only a matter of time!

You haven't really made it as a builder until you're been counterfeited. Congrats Taylor, you're one of the big boys now. ;-)

A dubious honor indeed.

A strange thing is that I went on the Taylor factory tour late last month(3rd time). A good friend from Cleveland came to visit who is also a Taylor owner wanted to see the factory. The tour guide spent some time talking about counterfeit guitars that have been showing up in the market.

It really is a bad thing. I feel sorry for someone who does not know these instruments and let's say is shopping for a gift for a husband, wife, boyfriend, son, daughter and buys one thinking it is genuine. The appearance is good enough to fool the novice.

Oh, the other big deal/tip off with one was there was no case. Every Taylor 200 series and above comes with a very nice hard case. It is extremely rare for the two to become separated and the owner not source another Taylor case.
