The subject of large and small Strat headstocks has been discussed here a lot. I like both, and currently have one of each.

Some people don't like the large Strat headstock, but I don't recall having heard how the Jaguar & Jazzmaster headstocks fare. They pre-date the Strat large headstock. To my eye, they look about the same as the large Strat, but I never closely compared them.

What say you? Is it just on Strats that the large headstock is disliked? Or is it larger than on the offsets, by enough to matter?

And which one is Big Head Todd named after?

The Jaguar and Jazzmaster headstocks are a slightly different (and smaller, IIRC) shape than the CBS-era large headstocks. Compare pics of them and you'll see the differences.

The inspiration for the name Big Head Todd was the sometimes goofy nicknames of the original blues guys like Eddie "Cleanhead" Vincent. Eddie got his name when he used a lye-based hair straightener, things went awry, and all his hair fell out. I hate when that happens!

Here's a link to a diagrammatic comparison of Fender headstocks in pdf form, created by Kim Lembrechts and made freely available at his guitarplanscollection site. Thanks Kim if you should ever see this!

Peegoo and vomer, thanks for the info!

I've always thought the Jazzmaster and Jaguar looked "just right" with those headstocks. Not too big, not too small.

I wonder if it is not just how the guitar looks but also to add balance to the guitar? Just wondering thats all

Nah, the weight issue isn't a factor in headstock shape, because the weight of wood per cubic inch varies, even within identical species.
