Fender chrome locking tuners part 0990818100 look like the old Schaller style that came on the Deluxe Strats. They are made in Taiwan, not Germany were the Schaller are manufactured.

Been thinking about changing my Strat and Tele over to locking. Schaller still manufactures this style tuner but without the "F" logo on the knob.

I guess my question is are they as good as Schaller, if not why?

Are these new Schaller look alike Taiwan tuners good enough to be worthy of a Strat or Tele.

One more note, the American Standard Strat and Tele came with staggered tuners, 2 tall 4 short. The locking tuners come 3 tall 3 short. Anyone have an idea why?

I have those on both my AmStd Strat and AmStd Tele. Quality is really nice.

I purchased on installed them on my AmSpcl, and, am quite satisfied. However, since I have never used Schaller, I can't compare.

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

Some of the newer ones have a better gear ratios than the Schaller's. If I remember correctly, the older Schaller locking tuners were 14:1 and a lot of the newer ones are 16-18:1.
So maybe a better trade off with the same good quality.

Another thing I just noticed is all the new American Elite, Deluxe and Standard have short post on the tuners, no tall ones at all. This is with locking and standard tuners.

I believe the newer Schaller only have one pin that goes into the back of the headstock whereas the Fender versions have two- might want to confirm before you order Schallers. The Schaller-made Fender versions on older guitars have two pins.

Schaller still makes the two pin lockers.

The lockers that have the "F" on the back of the tuner are made by Ping. The makers of golf clubs.

How do I know that? Easy, an email to Fender when they switched from the Schaller locking tuners to the "F" marked Ping ones.

I have a set of each on my two Strat's, the Ping ones seem to be holding up fine so far.

Ping also makes very nice stamped steel tuners that are almost dead-on copies of the original Klusons, but with internal Nylon bushings. Even though they're imports, there is nothing better for any price.

I've also had tuners mfd by Ping and never a problem.
IIRC, I'm pretty sure Wilkinson tuners are made by Ping.
Some may dismiss Wilkinson hardware as sub-par, but I've used their tuners numerous times and been completely satisfied.
