News story I heard on the radio this morning.

"Child rescued from sewer in south Buffalo"

* cut/copy/paste *

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) â âJust hysterical just screaming for her mom,â said Buffalo Fire Captain Daniel OâLeary.

Thatâs how a 12-year-old girl was after first responders pulled her to safety around 9:00 am Tuesday after falling several feet into a sewer on S. Legion Dr. in South Buffalo.

âShe was standing in about a foot or two of water. Members from Engine 25 and Truck 10 put a 12 foot ladder down and assisted the little girl outâ said OâLeary.

Captain Daniel OâLeary says Grace Knox was on her way to Southside Elementary School when she fell into this sewer that was missing itâs cover.

âShe was walking to school about 7:30 so she was in the sewer for approximately an hour before a bystander heard her screaming for help, she was screaming for her mom,â said OâLeary.

Buffalo police say the girl broke her leg in the fall, and was brought to Women and Childrenâs Hospital.

âJust walking along and she just fell through a hole. Her cell phone was on the side of the hole, outside,â said OâLeary.

Officials found the cover a short distance from the scene, but canât explain how it got there.

âThe manhole cover was about 5 feet away just sitting in the grass, nobody knows,â said OâLeary.

******************************************

Now, I'm not a detective, but I think I got this case cracked. I see 'STUPID' on a daily basis.

In August my daughter and I were stopped at a red light, when we saw a kid riding his bike and looking at his cellphone. He ran right into a street sign. I was glad he didn't get hurt, but we both kinda laughed out loud. We both admitted laughing about it was wrong, but the kid didn't hear us laughing. August in Southeast Texas = 100+ degree temps... our car windows were closed/air on.

I saw that item on our local TV news here in western NY this morning, and have to admit the first thought I had was that the cell phone must have been obstructing the view of the very large open hole in the walkway. Hopefully, lesson learned (?)

"Now, I'm not a detective, but I think I got this case cracked. I see 'STUPID' on a daily basis."

Problem with your theory: she was in the hole and the phone was outside. And its impossible to separate a 12 year old from their phone. :)

I feel bad for the kid, but it sounds like a Road Runner cartoon. Remember the video going around a few months ago of the woman stepping into the open sidewalk elevator?

"I feel bad for the kid, but it sounds like a Road Runner cartoon. "

Yup, she was walking, went right over the hole, hovered there for a moment or two, looked down and saw the hole, and WHOOSH there she went!

Kind of a harsh life lesson, but there it is.
