What the heck is HEIC, my poor old Windows machine can't make heads or tails out of that?<br /> <br /> I guess JPEG is history?

Good ol' Apple. One more reason I rarely update my IOS devices or Macbook.

If you ever upgrade to IOS 11, say goodbye to JPEG format.

Strange. My iPhone has ios 11 and the pictures are in jpeg. No problem here.<br /> <br /> It might be that 11.0.1 fixed the problem. I don't think I took any iPhone pictures when it was 11.0.0.

I just tested emailing both newly screenshotted and newly taken pics with my iPhone 7 running 11.0.1, no problem - emailed photos are jpg.

Mine are still jpg. <br /> <br /> Has it got to do with optimizing images? I have that shut off.

Thanks for that how to link, I went in and changed my camera setting to "most compatible".<br /> <br /> I'll test it later today but I'm sure that will solve the issue. I don't need the most compact storage, I need the most compatible format!<br />

You're welcome!<br /> <br /> "I don't need the most compact storage, I need the most compatible format!"<br /> <br /> Same here.

FWIW I have my Nikon DSLR set to JPEG also, and for the same reason, namely compatibility.

I shoot RAW in all my cameras (.CR2).<br /> <br /> I see that there are now smart phones that shoot RAW. Not Apple though.

Still no joy with importing pics. I changed the format to "most compatible". Now when I try to import pics from my iphone my laptop says "no new pictures found".<br /> <br /> This is why I use a regular digital camera on all my hiking stuff, just can't deal with the Apple BS.<br /> <br /> (That said everybody just keep buying Apple products. Signed AAPL stockholder)

This "feature" must be iphone-model specific. I have an iphone 6s running ios 11.2.2. In the settings for camera, the options to change photo for photo compatibility (as shown in one of the links above) is not there.

A little more research. HEIF format is only available on iphone 7 and later.
