So a couple day's ago my VISA card stopped working. I found out in the grocery checkout line with a cart full of stuff. Since my bank has a branch right in the store I leaned on them to explain why my card got locked.<br /> <br /> The bank was very helpful jamming my call into VISA to someone who could help me. So it turns out my card was locked by their computers due to "suspicious activity". Except nobody either can or will explain exactly what transactions caused this to happen. So they asked me about the last few transactions which I told them were mine, so they unlocked my card.<br /> <br /> Thing that kind of ticks me off is they apparently don't notify you when this happens. So imagine taking your family out to dinner only to find out you can't leave until you wash a boatload of dishes :)<br /> <br /> One more reason to carry a wad of cash I guess.

Forgot to add, the only unusual transaction was $10 charge by Experian for a credit freeze, per my instructions. Maybe that lit up VISA, who knows?

If I make an odd purchase, they will text me, I respond, card unlocked.

I did the credit freeze on all three. If your info is out there they can try to use it through any of the three. I think it was Trans Union that charged a fee.

I tried to use my VISA a couple weeks ago and it would not work so I used another card for lunch. When I got home I called them and they asked me if I made a $50 charge in Istanbul Turkey. I had not. I am thrilled that they will lock a card when something like this happens. It is a little scary that they are watching closely enough to freeze your account so quickly.

I took off for the east coast a couple of years ago and was stopping every 150-200 miles for gas etc. as I was on a motorcycle and the card was easy to deal with on the road. My wife called up and told me the card company had phoned her to see what was happening before they shut me down. I was glad to see them taking an interest.<br /> I'm sure they are protecting themselves as well but it does seem good that they care for whatever reason. <br />

I have a visa through my local credit union. When going on vacation I have to let them know where I'm going and which states I will be passing through so my card service isn't interrupted.<br /> A bit of a pain but also good protection I guess.

I think Iâm going to call Visa and inquire if the they can notify me. I sometimes travel to other States and I donât want to get stranded with a frozen card.

I only use AMEX -- for pretty much everything. I have never had a problem with them in almost thirty years. The few times that I have contacted them while on the road -- I was always able to get right through to an account manager (who spoke English) and got an answer in seconds.<br /> <br /> But being a tiny bit paranoid, I always have three or four hondos tucked away in my wallet in case incompetence rears it's ugly head.

My credit union calls me prior to locking my cards. The automated system asks for confirmation of the transactions that have raised flags and then all is well. I have no problems with this system it seems to work well enough. I like that they are pro-active. <br /> <br /> The trigger events seem to be small dollar amounts from unusual sources. Recent ones have been the air pump at a gas station (the transaction listed as NJ so raised the flag) and another was the small initial amount that an auction site processes (and later refunds) to verify the card.<br /> <br /> You guys locking your credit ratings has me wondering if I should do the same now I finally have one worth protecting again!
