Relics produce tone, man.....

It was either the 64's or 52's. I have no doubt that I will get some use out of them. The tele they are going in has a Pawlonia body that is feather weight. It boggles my mind how many different pups there are with all of them consisting of the same basic materials.

"...the same basic materials."

That is true. The recipes may be the same, but the difference is who's doing the cooking.

It's like my grandma's recipe for chicken and dumplin's: I use the exact same ingredients, techniques and cook time, but it's never as good as my grandma's.

Same for pickups: the metal component percentages in the magnet alloy, tension on the coil wire, the temperature in the room when the bobbins are spun up, etc., all make a difference in how a pickup sounds.

And tone is sooooo subjective too--what works great for one player sounds like poo to another player. It's why there are so many amp makers too.

You find a tone that works and you go with it.

What's important is right now I could sure go for a plate of chicken and dumplin's.

Why do I keep fixing things that work?

My wife makes her mom's chicken and dumplings and she has gotten really close to the same flavor. So the story takes a twist! Pickups, yeah we were talking about pickups! Lol
When you start talking about G'mas cooking, you knew the story was going to go off kilter. Shame on you.....

The band I play in, most of us have whatever came in the guitars. My Tele has a mix of Alnico 2's and 5's. The neck pickup is an Alnico 2 and gives good string dynamics, which doesn't get woofy, and has great character.I'm using 300k pots with 47 mfd. caps. This works well for both the bridge and neck pickups without getting too bright and the bridge pickup gets some good girth and bite. I had to raise the bridge pickup up to balance with the neck pickup, but this setup really has a good tone and sound. It's an alder body with a maple neck.
I first tried 250k pots but found the pickups just lost their treble response and the slight increase to the 300k pots brought back the treble that seemed to flatten out on both pickups.
I think sometimes that the 300k pots get overlooked sometimes when you want to increase the treble edge and some of the lost gain. I'm not sure if I would use this same setup in an ash body with a maple neck, but it sure is nice to be able to modify and experiment with these guitars. Once you find the right combination of ingredients, it's just Magical!!!
So, what about those dumplings? Lol
"same basic materials."

True. And the pickup world is a game of subtlety for the most part, so there is a lot of cork sniffery and wine tasting going on, but that's not to say that differences aren't actually there. In fact, they are. Everything Peegoo says is correct.

I have ear tested many foundries' alnico 5 against each other and no two are the same. Thats just one variable. Then factor in how the winder winds... they are all truly different. Many restaurants make cheeseburgers and they are all different... go figure.

Relics produce tone, and then some...

Well my pups arrived yesterday. The bridge will not read anything on my meter. Everything looks pristine so there must be a break somewhere in the wrap.

Dang. I really am one with little patience... request sent to Musicians Friend for a return.

After 6 days of waiting for a return auth I called them, I bought these through ebay which I see was a mistake. Now I wait for the refund.

Think I am going to take the business elsewhere and buy a set of 62's. Not impressed with them and I know they are a supporter here so I will simply not leave any feedback. Meanwhile my tele sits with a scowl....

I am sure its a scowl.
