And do you remember how much it was new? I played a really nice one today that was 2007 NOS. It had a headstock break in the store that was repaired very well, but my brain says "broken means used" and I'm wondering what a reasonable price is. I'm thinking the break and repair is probably a $200-$300 ding.

Well, it's not a real SG if it doesn't have a broken headstock...
As stupid as this may sound, a properly-repaired headstock break on a Gibson is quite a bit stronger than the factory-fresh headstock. It's simple physics: the wood broke along its weakest grain lines, and it was repaired. A glue joint is vastly stronger than plain wood.

However, since the guitar has been repaired, it does knock the value down. You (as the buyer) have to decide if (1) you can live with knowing you're playing a broken/repaired guitar, and (2) if the price is fair.

The best advice I can give you is make an offer that's lower than what you're willing to pay for it, and perhaps the shop will counter-offer and come up to what you consider a reasonable sale price.

I have a '99, but I can't remember how much. I did buy it used in 2002? Sorry, I'm no help.

I think the guitar you're looking at in good condition would be about $500-$650 tops.

Just for a reference, I bought a '01 Gibson LP Jr. with no issues in good shape for $450.

I'd pay $200-$250 tops for the guitar you're looking at.

I would have to make sure I could get my money back if I couldn't bond with it.

BF66Prince, I think I remember your thread on the LP Jr. and that's what prompted me to post. I asked about haggle room before leaving the store and was denied - I just needed some people to talk me down from the ledge.

And thanks, Peegoo. I know it's "stronger than stock," but there's also a pretty set hit one takes on a repaired headstock in terms of resale.

Yea, that price range, you're not going to get much back if resold.

Don't care if it says Gibson or not, when it's only an inexpensive instrument to begin with in that range, then take it to used with (repaired) damage.

The store's going to be sitting on that one a LONG time if they don't grasp it's NOS when they broke it.

It's a repaired used instrument, they salvaged some worth out of it, sure...but it's not what they think.

That's about what the most a used Les Paul Jr should be with no repair. I think I paid *about* $450- $500 for the '99 SG Jr when I bought it NOS in 2002.

They're dreaming @ $699.

You need to keep looking Brent.

I think if you're patient, eventually you'll run into a good one with out a repaired neck.

Good things come to those who wait.

I don't know where I heard that, but it's worked for me plenty of times.

Chop $300 off it, and be willing to haggle, and they MIGHT move it.

I wasn't even looking for one! I was kind of hoping to find a flat-top LP with humbuckers (like a 2012 Special or a Special SL). I just hadn't seen a nice glossy, cherry SG Jr. in a long time and it rang like a bell. Truth told I was looking for something with 'buckers because my SE One with a P-90 was too noisy. It was the magic pull of GAS that almost had me buying something with the same problem I was trying to solve.

In the end I bought a P90-sized Super Distortion and put it in the SE One. Two birds, one roaring stone.

Oh, and rev - I think that's probably right. I hinted that I'd take it at $500 and they didn't even think that was worth bringing to the owner.

If it doesn't have to be a Gibson, Epiphone has produced set-neck SG Juniors in the past and if you look around you'll fine 'em.

Dillion Canada has put out some very nice SG Juniors that are pretty close to dead-on spec with the original version. I have one (single P90) and it is a very very nice player.

I found it on the used rack in a GC about six years ago. It was pristine; the previous owner had installed Schaller locking tuners on it, and it came with an SKB airline hard case. All for $200 out the door.

At $500, you're just lighting your money on fire.

Unless that guitar sings like an angel and lights shine down from heaven...
