I bought a Boss Katana 50 today for practice and direct recording. What an amp, extremely versatile and easy to use!

Rather than a ton of amp models, they're just 5 amp settings that go from acoustic to the high gain "Brown" setting. By lowering the gain on the Brown channel, I was able to get excellent SRV/Hendrix sounds.

Farewell Mustang III ver. 2? I probable wouldn't get squat for it so it will probably hang around. (:oD

I have had my Boss Katana 50 since December and I love it, too ! A terrific-sounding amp (using Roland/Boss Tube-Logic and COSM, as well as amp/speaker circuit interaction) and the ability to use the many on-board Boss FX really adds to it's versatility.

Did you know there are an additional 28 guitar amplifier recreations "hidden" inside (as well as additional FX and features) ? These are accessible now with a 3rd party software program.

All in all (and at it's cost)a pretty remarkable amplifier. (and yes, I still also love my other amps including my Mustang Iv2.)

Mike

Mike - I didn't know about the additional amps and FX, thanks. Of course I've not read the manual yet. (:oD

It's crazy that the Katana 50 sells new for $200.

I've been eyeing these amps. I'd pull the trigger in a heartbeat if I hadn't just bought a VHT 12/20RT.

Saw them in a local music store the other day. Had no time for a tryout, but others were raving about them.

"Mike - I didn't know about the additional amps and FX, thanks. Of course I've not read the manual yet. (:oD ......"

You are welcome ! Actually, you won't find all the extra amps and stuff mentioned at all in the Boss manual. It was found by people checking out how certain MIDI-type commands are received through the USB port and it was noticed by them that the Katana seemed to have a great deal of Boss's flagship floor multi-FX GT-100 processing power inside.

A 3rd party "floorboard" editor allows you to access these amps and, if you like, you can then import a "Live Set" consisting of these amps into Tone Studio.

But to work with the additional FX and the ability to use 5 FX at once (rather than Tone Studio's limit of 3)you will need the "floorboard" graphic interface.

Mike
Yea, it's the "Roland Whisperer" - he's done editors for pretty much everything before Roland gets them out.

I use them for the GT-100 and GR-55.

"Roland Whisperer"? Sounds mysterious. (:oD

Knowing me, I strongly doubt I'll look into the extra amps and features. I like quick and simple, as long as I can get the tones I want.

I agree the regular amps and FX are outstanding and the amp can just be set in "simple" mode and used really effectively that way. One can also use their Fender Mustang amp in that way too, if desired, and they work great just like that.

I will say, however, it is worth checking them out, because you can just find a really great amp/fx/setting that you like, then make it a preset and after that, leave the amp in simple mode again and not touch the "floorboard" editor or even Boss Tone Studio.

Right now, I have set my clean channel preset to be a Fender Twin and my lead channel to be a Bogner Ubershall. You can instantly change back to the normal Boss factory channel by rotating the "Amp Type" knob at any time. Tone and volume can always be adjusted on the fly without causing the channel to revert to original settings.

The "panel" setting still allows me to access the regular Boss amps on the fly, too. As you know, there is "Acoustic" (a more full range setting), "Clean" (a Roland JC-120), "Crunch" (a tweed Deluxe), "Lead" (a Peavey 5150) and "Brown" (a Soldano SLO 100).

Mike

The Tonestudio software is as simple as it gets.

You can go exceedingly deep, but...you don't have to!

Don't honestly know what to say, there are tutorials and it's about as simple as those sorts of things can ever be.

The amp sounds best in the 50-watt mode. When you use the 25-watt or 0.5-watt settings, the low end suffers.

Also, the amp sounds great "as is" with the limited amp setting provided. I really love the Brown channel with the gain dialed back pretty far.

I've had the 100 watt version for a few months now. Great amp, killer sounds available from every setting. LOVE that it has the acoustic channel - and that it sounds damn good. No more separate amp and/or PA connections for playing acoustic at a gig. Just need an A/B box for the guitars.

Anyone know if you can apply any of the special promos at MF to get one of these for even less than 2 bills? I'm tempted, but would love to pay even less...
