My new band is working up about 45 songs before we launch.

So far we have some Claptonesque blues stuff in the hopper. But I think we need about 10 good decent mainstream country songs in there somewhere.

I'm thinking about the kind of Tele twang stuff that gets them slow dancing and the women sloppy drunk and on occasion provokes a fist fights in the parking lot out back.

So far I'm insisting on Chris Stapleton "Tennessee Whiskey" for starters. Then anything by Merle.

Suggestions?

Tony--Thanks for your list. It's spot on what I was looking for.

Basically those are mainstream commercially successful country songs that I think a working cover band should know.

And if the audience doesn't get it that won't bother me. I'm gonna play JJ Cale early and often. His stuff is in that sweet spot that transcends all genres.

I guess this is as good a place as any to post this... A new sign on the wall next to the bandstand at one of the local watering-holes:

"Drinking can cause memory loss...or even worse, memory loss."

(They put it right next to the sign that says:

"$25 fine for 'Mustang Sally'..." )
