Hi guys,

I just bought 1994 Fender Strat '57 Reissue that was listed as mint condition. Mostly to play at home, enjoy the guitar for what it is, and possibly sell it in the future. So there is some investment thinking involved, although I will be playing it at home. No plans to trash it :)

First thing I noticed is that the selector switch has been changed to a 5 way, the 3 way is included in the case candy. I know the reissues came with the 3 way switch installed and the 5 way in the case. I took off the neck and checked the pots, everything else looks fine.

I realize it's a small change, but still a modification to the electronics. I still have the original 3 way switch. Any ideas on how this might affect the investment value if I decide to sell at some point in the far future?

Are your prayer beads maple or rosewood?

As long as you still have the original switch, it's all good.
Although I've hardly met a person who would prefer the 3-way setup. It's kinda like a 52 RI Telecaster. It comes out of the factory one way and then EVERYBODY wires it to modern specs.
You're going to enjoy your guitar a lot more with the 5-way switch.

Just play the dang thing.

Thanks! Oh I'm definitely enjoying it. Just got it a few days ago and have played it every night.
But wanted to check it out to make sure all was ok inside. In the end, I'm still putting down money on it and want to make sure everything was legit. Thanks again. A few photos in the link, probably should've posted that in the first place.

Buying a guitar as an investment is not sound financial planning. Seriously.

The only way a guitar is a good investment is if you buy something with actual collector value *today* for pennies on the dollar and then resell it. Otherwise, buy a guitar to enjoy.

It is--however--the sound of rock and roll!

I changed out the 3-way to a 5-way soon after I bought my 1957 Reissue Strat. The 3-way could have ended up in a Tele when someone brought in his guitar for repairs. That's how much I treat unused parts when they sit in the case.

My hunnie got me a CS Strat in 2004. It's a 1960, and it came with a 3-way installed with a 5-way in the case candy. I played it for about a month, swapped out the switch, and never looked back.

The original 3-way switch is in one of my homebrew Telecasters.

It has absolutely no effect on the value.

Small changes involved with upkeep and wear & tear of the instrument don't affect value until you're in the top tiers of collectability. So... if we were talking about a genuine 1957 then yes, but not a reissue, nor on a Custom Shop.

And even in the case of an original 1957, it would barely budge the value unless we were talking "stored in a time capsule" sort of mint condition otherwise.

A switch poorly installed would be another matter, but that is easily corrected.

As Pinetree says,

"Just play the dang thing."

Seriously though, you will make yourself crazy worrying about this stuff. If this kind of thing stresses you out, you may have gotten the wrong guitar. No sense in having a liability.
