Just curious, but did Blackie have an ash or alder body? I'm guessing alder but all I've found is the body is a '56 Strat and the neck from a '57.

Yeah, it's probably alder.

It's a curious thing. I was gaga over Brownie, even built a loose replica which turned out to be the finest Strat I've ever owned. I was always a big Clapton fan, but not so much from the "Cocaine/Slowhand" era. Never was attracted to Blackie even though I have owned 2 70's Black/Maple Strats. Come to think of it, those 2 clunkers may have turned me off to black Strats, lol.

Yeah, my favorite Clapton Strat tones are from his first solo album "and friends" and the Derek/Dominos album.

I have a Mark Kendrick built 1954 Strat (ash body) that covers those tones pretty well. It's the best Strat I've ever owned, and I've owned several over the last 45 years.

Was "Brownie" ash bodied? I've seen the real deal from a foot away and probably spent 10 minutes staring at it, but that was a few years ago. It belongs to Paul Allen and is in the EMP (or whatever they call it now) right here in Seattle.

Brownie was a 56 which at that point had mostly switched to alder as I understand. If you believe Wikipedia then it's alder. That's my guess too by the look of the grain.
