Hi I have bought a 72 Strat with Rosewood fretboard. The building quality is on masterbuilt level. The neck is thicker than anything I have seen or played before. Building quality beats my beloved 64 by miles. It sounds great. I have two good maple fretboard 74 Strats. They play and sound great but in building quality this 72 is worlds ahead. It reminds me of an early Valley Arts guitar I played. Does anyone know anything about this? Were there custom built guitars? Pictures will be uploaded soon. Thanks

There was no 'custom shop' at the time, but once in a while a guitar rolled off the line that was simply greater than the sum of its individual parts.

And I'm sure the guitar you bought was also tweaked and squeaked to perfection by a previous owner. Properly maintaining a guitar goes a long long way to help guarantee it will still be in racing form 50 years later.

I'm not sure about this, but I think Fender has always made special "one-off" guitars for special occasions, celebrities, employees, etc.--going back to the 50's. George Harrison's all-rosewood Tele comes to mind as an example. So it is possible that yours is one of those. But as Peegoo suggests, it's not that likely. More likely, it's just a really good '72 Strat.

Have to agree with the others that it's probably just a good example and well tweaked. I had a 72/3 Strat I bought new in 1973 and I recall it had a pretty beefy neck. However, it was, otherwise, a so-so example.
