I've had my two-tone sunburst/maple American Series (2003) Tele from new and must like it a lot to have kept it so long. It's done a lot of gigs and covered pretty much every type of music. It's come through almost unscathed, just needs some fret dressing and attention to the volume pot, which is crackly. Years ago I put in a four way switch and replaced the six saddle bridge with brass GT623 saddles. I'm now thinking about a replacement Callaham bridge and some new pickups with a higher output but still true single coils. I'd like to keep all that's good, while having more natural sustain and a hotter output. All advice and opinions very welcome.

You're making the right changes . . . I also have a 2003 natural/maple, American Series, and other than the scratchy pot, I went with same changes. I installed a four-way switch, the Callaham bridge and saddles, and Texas Special pickups, and swapped out the stock white pickguard with a solid black one. The Tele sounds exactly the same, only better, and it bites real nicely . . . definitely a much improved guitar. I love the Tele neck! Good luck.

Thanks Vince - just what I needed to hear, especially "exactly the same, only better". If I wanted a different guitar I'd get one. I hadn't thought about Texas Specials, but will check them out. My favourite so far is Seymour Duncan STL2 and STR2.I had a very good experience with SD Alnico Pro 2s on a previous project but want something hotter this time.

You might also consider the Lollar "Special T" pickups for something a little hotter than a typical Tele single coil. Check out their website or some of the reviews/demos on You Tube. The Lollar pickups seem to be some of the most well regarded replacement pickups out there (no affiliation).

I've got both the Lollar Special T's as well as the Callaham three saddle compensated bridge in my 200 year old pine Tele build.

Absolutely stellar.

Piano like percussive sound and clarity come to mind.

It sounds exceptional thru a recent DRRI as well as an early 70's 50 watt Marshall and greenback cab.

I considered a pickup change in my American Standard but decided to go with a Saturnworks preamp. I can use it for a vol boost or just leave it on for a hotter signal to energize my stock Twisted Tele and Broadcaster PUs. My 2012 Am STD remains stock.
