Just got off the phone with Fender to confirm the American Standard is now history and in a matter of weeks the new brand will be made public and shipped to stores.
To me the american standard, a truly excellent product and the flagship of fender guitars and basses should be left alone kinda like classic coke but now we have to wait and see what the new Coke is about for 2017. Your thoughts?

edited to say that I posted here as I'm a tele guy, wasn't sure where to put this post.

wow...do they say what they are going to replace it with... or just get rid of it altogether?

I always thought that the AS was just the right amount of everything a tele could be

Likely just a name change and a couple tweaks.

It's not just good..

...it's good enough.

The American Standard was a replacement for the the American Series, wasn't it?

What jhawkr said - plus maybe a price increase.
(;^)

Marketing changes to "keep things fresh."
We'll just have to wait and see what the specs will be for the new, base model MIA Tele.

"Likely just a name change and a couple tweaks."
I think so too. Fender support did say the tweeks are gonna
be very cool. If I remember correctly he also said no price increase.
It does make sense to have only one model called the Standard.
Painted Headstock would be cool but my guess is it will be something to do with the electronics.

bmeredith over in the Strat forum reports these "leaked details" of the new "American Professional Series" Strat:

*"Deep C" neck profile
"V-Mod" pickups, which apparently will have a blend of A5 and A2 magnets
Volume control has a treble-bleed
Tone 1 on N and M, Tone 2 on B
"Narrow Tall" frets (6105?)
A couple of new colors, Sonic Gray and Antique Olive, to go with the old favorites Black, 3-Color Sunburst, Sienna Sunburst, and Olympic White"*

So I assume we can expect something similar for the Teles.

I hope they don't switch it to "Substandard." ;)

Great! Now my '89 AS Tele will be an extraordinarily valuable vintage rarity! (ha)

The American Standard had a very long run. Mine was among the first of the AS Teles, and I bought it new for $508 in early 1989. The AS Strats had already been out for a year at the time. Still have the Tele and it's still all stock, except for the bridge saddles. Adjustment screws on the originals rusted sometime in the '90s when I lived near the Pacific. Must've been all that salt air.

RIP American Standard: 1987-2016 (OK, it was called "American Series" somewhere in there, like 1999 to 2005, or something. But pretty much the same difference.)

It will happen. Companies have to have "new and exciting" products, even if they are slight rehashes of 60 year old mainstays.

Here's a summary of the features of each of the new Am. Professional Series models. Note that the Telecaster will have three compensated brass barrel saddles.

I consider that "ashtray" bridge and 3 barrel saddles an improvement compared to the previous model with Strat style saddles on it - what was Fender thinking?! This time they got that feature right!

The treble bleed on the volume is an old trick that many of us have used for years - nice to see Fender finally coming around to it (although I have to wonder what that added to the price? $25 probably?).

I like the new Tele better than the new Strat...

I'm glad they thickened up the neck a little bit. That was one thing I disliked about the Am. Series/Standard guitars, the necks were a little skinny for my taste.

I really like that new Sonic Grey color too. Looks awesome with rosewood.

Sounds like good upgrades to me. Also curious about the new neck profile as standard Fender neck profiles have been way too thin for me for years.

"Narrow Tall" frets means I won't be getting an American Professional Series Tele (or Strat). I do like the other "upgrades".

Agree with urby about the new profile, although I'm not so sure when I hear the description on that video - "starts out thinner at the nut" - that's where I'd like to have a little more meat.

Will have to handle one in person to see. Then we'll see what colors they offer for lefties...

Yawn... lefties get three color choices, and only maple fingerboards, no rosewood option. It's been this way for awhile on the Tele American Standard as well...

It's even worse on the Strat for lefties - two color choices - black or 3-color sunburst. Rosewood board is an option on both colors, though.

I guess I won't bother to upgrade from my Squire Tele Vintage, which is a fine sounding and playing guitar - and which I walked out the door with (brand new) for barely over 3 C-notes...
"Here's a video, just hit youtube today...."

Not the most inspiring video imo.

And... is it just my ears, or did the intonation sound wonky on some of the chord work that dude was doing?
