This is my first posting on this forum. My BIL has a USA Jazzmaster '62 reissue and says the pickups are too weak for his needs. At one time he had a 2016 MIM Surf Green Jazzmaster and really loved those pickups. He says that they had more output.

Are the pickups different on those two models? If so, what kind of pickups are on the MIM Jazzmaster and are they available for purchase?

Thanks

I'm thinking the new surf green MIM Jazzmaster has USA '65 Jazzmaster pickups in it.

where as.

The USA '62 Reissue Jazzmaster should have USA '62 Jazzmaster pickups.

The MIM may have had ceramic magnet PUs in it. They tend to have a bit more output. The tell on the imported guitars is typically the pvc covered wire as opposed to the cloth wire on the RI PUs.

That being said I owned a AVRI '62 Jazzmaster and loved the pickups. Smooth, balanced. Once I got them at the right height they were awesome. Sold the guitar when the economy tanked.

I bought a '68 MIJ JM to replace it when I recovered a bit. The pickups were good but not exactly what I was looking for. A little over a month ago I stumbled on a '65 RI set of JM PUs so in they went. I started a thread on them a couple of notches down.

The MIJs have a bit more output but to me the low end is not quite as tight, something I desire in a JM pickup.

To be even more confusing I have Seymour Duncan Antiquity JM PUs in my Offset Special (it came with stacked humbucking JMs) and I enjoy them too. 50s type tone and output much like the 65 Fenders.

If the BIL wants the PUs pulled from my MIJ he is welcome to try them. If he likes them he can keep them. If he doesn't he can donate them to someone else or send them back. Email me an address and it will be so.

The ones in the MIM 60s lacquer model are 65 RIs. But I hope the MIJs work out for you.

Yea, depends on which MIM Jazzmaster he had.

I love the MIM high outputs, the MIJs are nothing like them typically FWIW.
