If you can't play good, play loud

Last Friday night we were scheduled to play outside at the Tiki Bar at a local Country Club. 7:00 to 10:00, not a bad gig for a geezer band.
We arrived at 5 ish to set up but it was threatening rain so we brought our gear into the clubhouse to wait for it to clear. We garabbed some seats at the Tiki Bar, ordered some food and drinks. About 6:00, it downpoured, thunder, lightning, etc. By 7 - 7:30 it was still raining off and on and our "stage" was a big puddle. At 7:45 the manager came and told us our gig was canceled, ordered us a round of drinks and paid for our meals, and handed us a check for 2/3 of fee, and then booked us for another time. We packed up our gear and headed out.

Paying us just for showing up is good business. We're looking forward to giving them a good show next time.

I had a similar experience at a winery although we did get set up. We played the first set and a light misty rain started. We attempted the 2nd set but it began to get wetter. We called it off and got paid for the whole night just for trying.

It's great to work for people like that.

We were paid for our 4th of July gig even though it was rained out. We are playing the Oktoberfest for the same city next month.

Nice thing about a country club is that they probably have an entertainment committee that has a budget, so the money was already dedicated for the event. Win/win, and it means you'll certainly be back again.
