Looks to me like Fender is in the midst of a major upgrade in the quality of its acoustic guitars -- similar to what it undertook years ago at Squier when Keith Brawley was in charge.

Several months ago I purchased a Fender dread as an MF SDooD -- solid sitka spruce top, solid east Indian rosewood sides and back -- and I love it.

Earlier this week, it was a Fender jumbo -- solid sitka spruce top, laminated figured maple sides and back -- just getting to know the guitar but it is off to a great start. It has that loud balanced jumbo sound.

I had earlier purchased an Epi EJ200 -- but that is going back to MF. It does not hold up to the Fender.

Both Fender guitars were priced under $500 with cases.

Most offshore/far-east makers are now using tried-and-true construction methods, quality woods, and proper glues for acoustic guitars.

And automated production has really helped keep these guitars quite affordable.

Most makers about eight years ago were pricing themselves out of the market with solid tops, so many were laminated to stay in the nice-price range, and many didn't sound very good.

Fender is kicking out some nice acoustics these days.

I took my new jumbo in for a set-up at a local acoustic instrument shop. All it required, after they checked the neck, frets, nut and saddle, was an adjustment of the truss rod.

$20 and it came home in one day.

Compared to the Epi EJ200, the Fender really chimes -- is loud, has great clarity, balance, all the strings contribute to the sound, and the tone of great. It's a total keeper.

I am so very impressed with these Fender acoustics.

And shipping with a case is a nice bonus.
