I happened upon a player quality 1964 Jaguar at a guitar shop today. It's sunburst and shows lots of wear on the body- this baby obviously got PLAYED!

Anyway, the guitar is 100% original and plays/sounds great. Action is superb and frets are in excellent condition.

They want $2675 for it plus tax (call it $3K total). I have no idea if this is a good deal or bad deal and could use your thoughts on this, pro and con.

Many thanks!

6

goto reverb.com and check out some of the values of what they are asking. i think there is an option to see statistics on values when you go there as well.
that might help. that sounds nearly the realm of a new american vintage or used custom shop one- the price you are talking about. any pics?
It's certainly no bargain, but if you can swing it and it makes you happy, worst case you spend a few hundred for the time you have it.

Depending on how well-worn and what's included (original case, condition of case, etc) and the fact it's not a custom color, I'd say it's up to 20% high, but...I don't have it in hand to play.

Given what 2-3k buys you these days, it's a case of how does it stack up against other instruments.

That said, good Jaguars are hard to find and it *is* a pre-CBS if everything checks out.

At that price, I'd want it taken apart (they can do it) and inspect the pots/wiring etc for changes. You're paying a premium over market, and anything messed with they should come down fast.

Depending on condition $3K all in would put it at the top of the current market for a non-custom sunburst but don't let that stop you. A guitar you can actually test drive beats the hell out of some photos on ebay so don't forget to factor that angle into your decision.

Welp... I called the store back and the guitar had already sold instantly to the guy who saw it right behind me. Sold at $2675+tax= about $3K.

You snooze, you lose...

6
