This is a rough track, still in progress. So far all tracks are me, vocal and instrumental. My son, Jay, will be adding Mexican style accordion.

Critiques welcome, and rah rah comments too, of course.

Not bad at all.

Hard to top the GG Allin acoustic cover (seriously, as much as it pains me to say) but a solid pass.

Minor nitpicking: the attack on the initial bass @ 0:41 is a little off somewhere - intonation, how it's faded in, not sure what.

I'd consider tossing a *slight* bit of faux plate verb on the main vocal too.

GG's acoustic version captured on somebody's house VHS tape.

I really like the guitar voicings. Maybe capo it up a couple frets? It sounds like you're really at the end of your lower register there. Sounds like 2 or 3 frets would be about perfect to my ear. It will still have that real bass quality but the lowest notes will be more defined.

The Bari lead vocal was a last minute change to bring out the depression in the story. The original lead was up an octave. It's in Eb. First run in E put me at my high limit on the 3rd part harmony.

I'm considering retracking the lead after healing from neck surgery.

The bass note at 0:41 is a mix of the opening guitar sliding to it and the first bass note. It's the only open string note on new strings on the Gibson Jumbo. Will probably clip the guitar note and give it to the bass. Same bass note later is fine.

Intro is Gibson. Acoustic rhythm is a Y60 Yairi anniversary edition. It's tighter and takes less space in the mix.

Electric is the Schizocaster (MIJ '62RI Strat with bizarre pickup combination). Break section is neck APS-1 and Cool Rail middle. Electric support under vocals is just the Cool Rail.
Ah, the combo explains why I couldn't quite figure out what was "off."

Still, any Zevon is good Zevon in my book.
I rechecked and both were in tune. Closest I can figure is maybe different vibrato speeds on different size/scale strings.

Yea. Sometimes there's strange interactions.

Project I'm mastering for a client there's a filter effect that's 100% kosher, except where it intersects with a particular drum hit for a quarter of a second.

It's fine the rest of the time and I've heard both in isolation and there's no reason or rhyme for it.

I ran into warbles from different tracks on the same guitar. I had to fine tune an old nylon string for playing mostly open position or up the neck.

A nice thing about Zevon tunes is that the stories stand on their own. Tracking bugs are pretty much self inflicted.

I have a suggestion. The 2 bass drum hits on "& 3" of each measure make it a little jerky. Try taking out the 2nd hit, and just have the bass drum single hit before the 3rd beat. I think it will groove better.

Good call on the kick, Gordon. The 2& stayed instead of the 3 for the chorus hits and the rest kept only the 1&3. The bass guitar and snare drum actually provide a ghost kick on the 2&.

Also retracked lead vocal. Neck brace requires more warmup time and positioning experimentation. Filled up lungs more for lower notes. Bigger bellows = easier push.

Remixing.

I liked it.

No criticism here. I like it a lot actually.

Fresh lead vocal track. A few edits. Getting closer.

I like it. The instruments flow together nicely. The vox lead conveys that wry resignation that makes the song a good one.

The new vocal is further forward in the mix than the old; you might experiment by mixing it a smidge back. Just a thought. Good stuff.
