I've recorded the band live using 8 inputs ( vocal, vocals, bass, kick, snare, cymbals, guitar, toms) into a Presonus interface into GarageBand. I'd like to experiment with just two channels using two mics, placed front left and right . What would be some reasonable suggestions?

What are your thoughts on mic placement?
Do you want the mics to hear primarily the mains, the sound coming off the deck itself? Both?

I think you will be disappointed with the results using mics only, regardless of their design or placement.

A better choice would be to do the mic thing and record a two track send from the mixer.
Then delay the direct source to time align that source with the room mics.

Wide cardioid mics suffer somewhat less from proximity effect, and small diaphragm capsules do a better job of recording the transients.

Here's a link with some stereo micing options.

cheers

Forgot to add...if you want the mics to hear both the mains and the sound coming off the deck...the mains should be delayed to time align them with the back line.

It'll sound quite a bit different to the multi mic setup. This session sounds good in the link. You have to pay extra special attention to where the players are though. This is your only chance to balance them besides their dynamics.

If that response is for me - I'm not actually a part of that project - but the album is available - called the "Coyote Sessions" I believe.

I've always had outstanding results recording a room in stereo using two small Crown PZMs.

Mic placement is not critical, and no comb filtering issues. Set and forget.
