Do you actually try to market your songs?

If you write with other people, do you copyright?

If so, how do you specify the percentages for each writer?
I haven't copyrighted anything for many years. I did it a lot back in the day when I was trying to sell my songs. I gave that up a long time ago.

If you are planning to sell songs then copyrighting them is a good idea. Go to The Library Of Congress website. Any information you need should be there. BTW, there was no internet when I was trying to sell songs. :o)

Before the days of Internet songwriter wannabes went to Nashville, LA or New York. You had to be there in person and beat on doors, make the right connections, get yourself out there.
Even in todays Smart phone world that is still the best way to get it done.
There are hundreds of thousands of people writing songs and sending them to anyone and everyone they possibly can. There may be, seriously, only a couple of hundred sets of ears whose owners have enuff influence to get a song in front of a recording artist of any significance for them to listen to it. Finding that set of ears will be your toughest job, after of course you have written an impeccable song with universal appeal that suits a specific artist at a specific time in their career, after which of course having had fine musicians play your song which engineers record and producers produce unless of course you are a multi instrumentalist who is a whiz at Pro Tools in which case you're 40% there.
Yes it is that sophisticated and yes it is very difficult to get your foot in the door.
But as evidenced it is not impossible.
Counting the number of words contributed to a song lyric in order to determine a percentage of royalty is absolutely the least of your worries at this time.
Slim
