A friend of mine gave me a non-working 1981 TS808 in the late 80s and told me if I could fix it I could keep it, he never like the sound it produced. It turned out to be an easy fix (a broken battery lead) and I took him up on his offer. I've enjoyed the pedal over the years and have been blown away by how much these are going for now, especially since there are so many boutique pedals claiming to sound just like it.

Well, I've always been skeptical of marketing hype but recently had the chance to play side-by-side with a psudo-vintage FD2 from the mid/late 90s. It's the powder blue version with pull comp, white knobs and volume, tone, gain, and boost. Let me preface by saying my rig is a 65 reissue strat (with 69CS pickups) through a 1966 BF Pro-Reverb with Weber 12F150 speakers.

I've also never played any other version of either pedal, later, earlier, or reissues. In this side-by-side though all I can say is Holy Taco! With just a few adjustments from the reference point of the 808 the FD2 sounds identical to my ears. Overall the FD2 is slightly darker but that can be compensated for by adjusting the tone knob a higher (3:00 o'clock to the 808s 12:00 o'clock).

Anyway, I'm just curious if anyone else has done a comparison with other versions of either pedal and come to similar conclusions?
