Kathmandu, Nepal.

and your strange bewildering times...

I have a G5120 guitar in orange. I would like to convert it into a killer Rockabilly axe. I'm particularly looking for that Brian Setzer 'Stray Cat Strut' kinda tone. I live in Kathmandu, Nepal and have a friend coming from the US (DC) end of this month. So I will have to do a bit of research before I hand him my final shopping list for this upgrade.

What model pickups do you recommend I should look out for? I'm guessing TV Jones? Any particular combination I should consider for that classic Setzer tone? If TVJ is the final verdict will I be able to have them ship it to my friend in DC by the last week of this month before he flies here? I'd also like some input on whether a wiring harness is desirable and I've seen videos of people using some kind of pipe/tubings to install the TVJ's. Is that really necesary?

In the process I also want to do some other mods. Change the bridge, maybe upgrade the Bigsby vibrato and the spring, a bone nut perhaps and some aesthetic, purely visual mods (knobs, stickers, pickguard etc)

Any input on this would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Brain plays tv jones classics. I put them in my 5120 and it has a great rockabily vibe. The reason in know he plays the classics is I called the tv jones company and asked. Cheers

If you want to use the classic Filtertron package and have them adjustable, you gotta get a little bit creative...

I think Tom now sells higher rings to fit these. But you'll have to make little brackets as above. You can use anything that will hold a screw thread--even two or three Popsicle sticks glued up like a sandwich and cut to length.

I used polycarbonate plastic for that project.

If you're looking to find Brian's tone, you'll be needing an early Fender Bassman amp and a Roland Space Echo. Those items are even more important than his guitar.

6

I ordered a set of TV classic with the English mount and in the process of ordering a Tru-arc bridge. Will also be getting new tuners, nut, 1 inch vibrato spring, dice knobs, Gretsch black decal logo, new custom pickguard with the Nashville signpost only mine will read "Katmandu" not Nashville and a cowboy girl sticker. Super stoked about this project!

6L6, cant afford a Bassman or that Roland echo. I'll make do with my '66 Princeton Reverb amp and the carbon copy for some slapback.

Can anyone recommend where's the best place to order all of the goodies listed in the above post. Would have to be an online purchase obviously. Thank you!

I see not that Tom's selling the original-size Filtertrons WITH the ears on the base plate. NICE!

Deep, you should have a

Having tried TV's Filtertrons and MagnaTrons, my ears definitely prefer the thicker tone of the MagnaTrons.

But if you REALLY want a great rockabilly tone for your Gretsch, find a DeArmond 2K Bridge pup for it. Hard to find, but worth the effort!

6

I just pulled a Powertron Plus bridge pup that came with my 5120...a little too much on the dark side for me without grabbing knobs on my amp.
Installed a Jones Classic in it's place and I'm a lot happier.

Ditto the DeArmonds. Got them in my 5127 and after a little tweaking they have really grown on me. Kinda' like a P90, kinda' like a Tele, but not quite either...all good.

The pick ups will take you part of the way.

The Roland space echo is key. not because of the echo effect but because of the built in pre-amp chip.

check out the link below. This guy "Tavo" has it sown to a science. i own a few of his units. night and day difference. really. He uses the same chip in a pre amp unit, he offers a few flavors. Amazing stuff!

UPDATE- The Gretsch 5120 upgrade goodies have landed in Katmandu! Im going to slowly work on them. I already replaced the stock tune-o-matic with the True Arc Brass bridge and can hear a pleasant difference already, very 3D sound compared to the stock bridge! Im sloppy with soldering so will be taking the guitar to a tech for the TV Jones swap and the rest. Hoping to post before and after pics in a week! Here's what I got so far!

⢠Chet Atkins style Bigsby vibrato arm
⢠1 inch Bigsby spring
⢠Tru-Arc rocking bar brass bridge
⢠TV Chris Jones Classic Bridge and Neck pickups with English mount
⢠Mounting rings
⢠Bone nut
⢠Brian Setzer style Lucky 7 Dice knobs

I will soon be placing an order for a custom pickguard from Paul Setzer. It will have a sign post similar to the Nashville post only mine will be inscribed "The Katmandu Cats," my fantasy Rockabilly band!!!
