Okay, so this is ridiculous, but I'm already getting my first new/used guitar of 2013 ... should be here Thursday or Friday (which is my birthday).

I did an odd trade - odd because I'm pretty happy with all my Warmoth "Strats" - but I just traded my SG Standard for a 2011 USA Strat in Lake Placid Blue w/rosewood board.

I discovered that I really don't like the fretwork on many Gibsons - "railroad ties" and I play Strats more than anything else in our worship, and in the other band I occasionally have gigs with. I've got several other humbucker guitars I really like and use.

So having another Strat won't be a bad thing, and if I decide I don't need it, it will be easy to sell.

Pics when it gets here...

...anyone else?

LM,

That's a nice looking "Custom".

What pickups are in the Carvin Bolt (is that the kit version? I had one of those years ago)?

I'm thinking about replacing the SG with an Epi G-400 PRO if I really need to scratch the SG itch.

The Bolt has Fralin Blues Specials. I kept the original pickups for many years and they were good. But the Fralins are that much better.

BTW, my son has the G-400 in righty. He keeps wanting to get rid of it because it's neck-heavy. I told him to keep it because it sounds great.

"BTW, my son has the G-400 in righty. He keeps wanting to get rid of it because it's neck-heavy. I told him to keep it because it sounds great."

Well, that's all I needed to hear - you're tempting me even more - thanks a lot!

The Strat arrived today and so far I'm impressed (but haven't plugged in yet). The neck wood is nice, and I'm surprised at how much I like the Lake Placid Blue - didn't think it would do anything for me, but it's pretty rich.

Need to take some relief out of the neck, but other than that, it's ready to go. Has all the case candy, strap, etc. ... this thing is basically brand new! And it says "Limited Edition" on the neck plate - I think because they don't usually make Lake Placid Blue in lefty.

Headed home soon and I'll plug in and compare with my other "Strats".

Pics soon...

My purchase for 2013 is a new Gibson SG Junior (Ebony) and Gator Case. It has one of those cooked fretboards (I'll let you know how it feels)Should be here by next Friday.
rev... yeah my two LPB strats surprised me, the color blue is nice and easy. I really like the airline approved cases. I also have the Surf Green color.........the deal I made for all three at the same time was the closer for me.
My G-400 Korean Epi; after the change to Alnico 4 Toneriders and my circuit work is now a true player without the mud that the stock pups and caps issued. Enjoy your Strat

Yeah, now that it's set up better (still not perfect), it plays and sounds 100% better...much more likely to keep it, especially considering how cheap I got the SG - which means I got this pretty cheap. And I agree, the flight case is pretty cool.

I've been playing it back and forth with my Warmoth's (one of 'em has Am. Series pickups in it) and so far, the best sounding guitar is the one with Bill Lawrence noiseless S280 pickups in it. The other one has a set of Rumpel's in it, and that guitar sounds different (maple board) but also very very good. The noiseless pickups are just so easy to get along with.

Yeah, that Epi G-400 is very tempting - I've got plenty of humbuckers and new potentiometers around here I can drop in to bring it up to speed...

My goal this year is to buy nothing other than picks and strings. 2012 was gear-year for me--new Tele, Jazz Bass, and Rumble 350 bass amp. I haven't worn the new off of them yet.

What's your "good guy" price on that?
Jan 12th, 2013 03:32 PM

Yeah, my real need and goal is to downsize the number of guitars and amps I have.

Which seems like a strange thing to say, because I just bought the Mustang V head, and I did a trade right before Christmas of my SG Standard for a 2011 Strat Limited Edition...but I'm not sure this Strat is going to be a keeper.

But I've got to sell a couple more guitars and either sell one amp, or just commit to no more new ones (currently have 3 tube amps, a Pathfinder 15R and the Mustang V).

My new 2013 buy, is my taylor 614CE, lefty of course. Ordered from Rudys music in NYC.It was done in less than a month. It is beautifull, has A grade quilted maple back & sides, sitca spruce top in transparent orange.I was afraid the spruce would not match the maple, but it does. And through the P.A., its as smooth as silk. I have my lifes dream Accoustic.165

Life gets in the way of my G.A.S.
Oct 18th, 2013 01:26 AM

Pulling this thread back up for a couple reasons:

As I read through it, I'm realizing that the Lake Placid Blue Strat is already gone - traded in on a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue in Surf Green w/Celestion 10" Greenback - nice sounding amp, which has been gigged several times by now (but has also been in the shop twice for a weak reverb, still not permanently fixed).

Other new stuff is the Larrivee C-10 acoustic mentioned in another thread here (pics in profile), and...

...I just bit the bullet and ordered the D'Angelico EX-DC/SP (335-style) in natural finish! I ordered from a forum sponsor, the Music Zoo, so I'm getting the very one pictured at their website (which is now no longer there, sorry - pics after it arrives).

These are getting very good reviews, and it just looks so much nicer than any other 335-style guitar that's not the real deal - especially for us lefties - there's just not much out there.

It will be interesting to see how good the Kent Armstrong pickups sound. I've already heard from someone here who owned a different lefty D'Angelico model that it had the typical backward wired tone controls (making them basically on-off switches) - so we'll see.

Anyone else need to update their lefty purchases for 2013?

(I've got more stuff for sale to cover these purchases...still trying to pare down the number of guitars and amps I have - really!)

I finally bought something other than strings; a buffalo leather Lakota guitar strap. These are made on the Pine Ridge Reservation and it's the softest leather strap that I've ever felt.

"These are made on the Pine Ridge Reservation and it's the softest leather strap that I've ever felt."

Wow - these are made just a few miles from where my wife grew up (in Chadron, Nebraska)! I guess I'm gonna have to order one!

Okay, 2013 is almost over; we'll have to start a new thread for 2014 lefty purchases in less than 48 hours...

...my last purchase of 2013 was from Rondo! An SX Hawk (strat-style) with a 2 piece swamp ash body. I'm hot-rodding it, but I could still reverse the mods (new black pickguard and 3 DiMarzio blade humbucking pickups) and send it back...it's not bad for $99, but it's not exact Fender specs, so hardware - and even other necks - won't work with it. Fortunately the neck is pretty good - fairly stout, and the fretwork is passable.

I also bought a SuperVee trem to put on the SX, but it didn't fit (that Fender spec thing) so it went on one of my Warmoths. I like it so much, I ordered another one for another Warmoth...

...that 2nd one should be here tomorrow. It will replace a Wilkinson that's so old it's impossible to adjust the saddles on it.

And, in other news, I sold an amp today - a Gibson Goldtone GA15-RV. Nice sounding amps - used to be the one I plugged in to at home all the time. Then I got my FSR Princeton Reverb RI. The PRRI has much better bass - even with a 10" Celestion Greenback versus the Gibson's 12" V30.

It was my second GA15-RV, because I regretted selling the first one, but I won't ever seek out another one - the PRRI's just more versatile...and easier to use with the knobs on the front. I think I actually got $50 more than I paid for it (used) around 5 years ago!

My goal is to get down to two tube amps - I'm also selling my Carr Rambler (it's listed here in the FS section, and on my local CL, but no bites at all).
