Bass player brought in a riff last nite.

Him and drummer worked on it before I got there.

The main riff was in 9/8 and the chorus was in 4/4.

Couldnt find the pocket, or the "one".

I dont mind quirky songs but not for rock.

We're not Dream Theater.....

Sure it is! 9/8 is basically a 3-feel. If your bass player is NOT playing a 3-feel, but emphasizing beats 1, 5, & 9, for example, then it's probably technically 9/4. 9/8 should feel like 1-and-uh 2-and-uh 3-and-uh.

I don't know any tunes off-hand, but I'll bet someone will come up with one or two.

Morning Has Broken.

Butterfly.

Jesu, (something,something)

all in 9/8.

I guess I need to get my drummer to play more of a 3/4 beat
To get a better feel to work with rock.

Some fusion-y tunes that are in 9 beats (9/4) feel like 8 with an extra beat.
