I bought a very nice black M77T during the big blowout almost 10 years ago.

Anyways, in spite of the hype, I've never liked the Dearmond 2K in the bridge. Too bright, harsh and dull. I've tried everything to give it more life- raised and lowered the pole pieces, as well as the pick up, also rotated the pickup to get it further away from the bridge, also changed the bridge. I think that the placement of the bridge is the main culprit here- there isn't quite enough distance.

But I just put a TV Jones Magnatron in, and it has made an enormous difference. There is still very distinct note definition and twanginess, but also much more heft and authority. I still have the 2K neck, and the middle position combination is especially good- thicker, but still defined.

I also got around to spraying the back of the clear pickguard with an aluminum colored paint. Much cooler.

ps- I have 6L6 to thank for the Magnatron recommendation, though considering how quiet this forum is, I don't know when he'll notice.

Anyways, having played it a bit now and comparing to several other guitars, I can make these comments.

Though it is a humbucker(it has two coils and two rows of polepieces), it is like a very powerful, yet relatively clean and clear single coil. It is also somewhat bright, but with definition and character that can be shaped. Thicker than a tele bridge, but similarily articulate. Sort of a meatier twang. The result is that the M77T/2K is now more what it should have been like, that is, a beefier single coil sound somewhat between a tele and a P90.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Magnatron!

My wife had a mint M-77T in Solar Bronze (think gold top) that she never played, so I sold it...that was not one of my wiser decisions.

Having played it for awhile I'm now thinking that I'll eventually get rid of the 2K in the neck and put another Magnatron there. The 2K used to sound good, al least relative to the bridge. Now it sounds lost in the fog. The middle position is still good though.

Well done, Professor!

Yep, the MagnaTron is a REAL winner. The BEST of TV JONES' pups IMHO.

6
