I got this mustang from a store in Texas. It used to belong to Carson Vester founding member of the legendary Texas trio Honky.I was told the finish is original(graphics are painted on).Anyone know what this color is?Some people told me that it is a faded Fiesta Red,but others said Fiesta Red from the early 70's(I think this is a 73)wouldn't have faded that much.

It does look a bit too faded to be fiesta red - if you look at the pics of my fiesta red 73 on shortscale.org (you posted in the thread, so check your posts), you will see that mine is a lot darker. Its possible if it has seen a lot of light though I suppose. If it is any other colour it is probably a refin, so it might be worth checking in the neck pocket to see.

Colors that were not effected much from the yellowing clear coat are the reds (in the 1960ís these colors are often not clear coated anyway). Unfortunately, these colors are highly reactive to sunlight (photo reactive). This could help explain the "Coral Pink" or "Salmon Pink" syndrome. Looking at Fender's custom color charts from 1960 to present, you can see Fender *never* had a color called "Coral Pink" or "Salmon Pink". The only official pink Fender used was Shell Pink from 1960 to 1963, which is a very flesh-toned pink color. The "Coral Pink" and "Salmon Pink" guitars are probably Fiesta Red in which the red pigment may had faded. Since Fiesta Red has a large amount of white in it, if the red fades the white would bleed through thus creating a pink. More likely though, and what many donít understand, original Fiesta Red is not really that red. From the can itís a pinkish, (light) orange hue. Every "Coral Pink" or "Salmon Pink" Fender I've seen from the late 1950's and later was actually Fiesta Red. I'm not saying "Coral Pink" doesn't exist. Perhaps it was a true custom ordered finish, not from the offered Fender custom color chart. Just people hear "red" in the name "Fiesta Red" and expect a fire truck-type color. If you want a fire truck, look for Dakota Red, not Fiesta Red.

It is not likely that this is an original finish.

Maybe but The weird thing is that after I read your post I saw this ebay ad for a 1996 Fender Custom Shop 1960 Stratocaster in Coral

hi folks!,
haven't dropped by in a long time...so I was just browsing....don't even know if my password works anymore....anyway..can't resist the Fiesta Red thing. westtexasred's pic is the closest I have ever seen to A Fiesta Red on the web or in print. It should look like Tomato soup with some milk in it. Can't comment on the Coral but the Mustang looks Fiesta Red to me......in my own defense I can only tell you that especially in 1986...I looked at more Fiesta Red, Surf Green, and Vinage White to pretty much last me the rest of my natural life.
I'm sticking with Fiesta. That one should go on the Fender.com color chart (maybe without the stickers though). :O) cheers folks!
an old friend, stopping by,
warmly,
rob

it is definitely Fiesta Red, and BTW a very cool axe with all the graphics and such.

Of course we could ask WickedGTR...I am sure he has an opinion...
