I started a website with a friend, and I am wondering if any of you forum members/readers
have any other solid, factual info regarding the '80's Master Series guitars (quantities made,
serial number info, etc.).

Thanks very much!

Too many guitars, one great riff

The Fender book "50 years of Fender" by Tony Bacon has a section on these.

These were the first Fenders out of Japan with the "fender" logo (previously only Squiers).

These were the first set neck Fenders.

I have an autumn burst Flame Ultra. For whatever reason, it seems there are a lot of these guitars in England and the upper Midwest US. Go figure.

If you ever run across a spare case or control knob (mine has the rubber/plastic outer sleeve missing) let me know!

Great site. I'd never seen pics of the frost white or green.

Just a quick thank you...

Someone e-mailed me with a source for replacement control knobs. From one of our sponsors no less, Guitar Parts Resource. (D'oh)

Unfortunately, I deleted the e-mail.

They arrived and they are a perfect match. So thanks for the heads up!

Hi Bottom Line, I do like your site. I especially like the original marketing info as I'd never seen it before. I also hadn't seen all the colour variations.

DO you guys know if there is much of a market for Fender Esprits? I've got a Candy Red Burst Fender Esprit Elite that I bought back in about 1991 and I haven't played it for about 5 years so was thinking of putting it up on eBay but don't want to find that I'd only get 50.

Have you heard of any of these selling recently?

I see quite a few posts about the new Squier Esprits and therefore assume that there must be some sort of demand.

Thanks for the kind word about the site, and thanks for checking it out.

I assume you've seen the Autumn Burst Esprit standard which sold for @$880 plus shipping, and there is also the black Esprit standard auction which ends this week. Opening bid on the black one is $799, and there are no bids as of yet. I haven't seen an Esprit Elite on ebay for a while, but I do know they typically sell for more than Esprit standards.
I've pretty much given up trying to 'Peg The Market' regarding Master Series guitars. I have been wondering how the new Squiers would affect the prices of the '80's models on Ebay, but the Squier bodies are mahogany, so they are inherently different anyway.
I guess I'd be VERY interested in finding out how many new Squier Esprits have been manufactured and/or shipped.
Sorry for the non-answers, best of luck, I'll be watching the auctions...

Genuine Fender "F" Black Knob.

I bought a set of 4 to replace the originals that were deteriorating.

Good Luck!

the guitars featured on the www.masterseriesguitars.com website are owned by a few different people, it was a collaboration.

It is definitely a mystery why Fender hasn't included hardshell cases with the new Squier Esprit guitars. I was considering ordering one from Musician's Friend on the net. In fact, I emailed them to ask what case they recommend. They did give me a description of a recommended model of case, but I can't remember what it was. You could certainly ask them. It was a rectangular case with an 'open area' inside. The photo of it looked like it did offer good back-of-neck support. Sorry I didn't save the email.

Occasionally the old '80's Master Series CASES appear on Ebay. I can tell you with absolute certainty that only 1 black rectangular case was used for BOTH Flames AND Esprits, both guitars fit in those cases, if that helps you. The only problem with the old cases is that the hinges haven't held up well over time, and they come loose unfortunately. Good luck...

I own a cherryburst Esprit and an Automburst Flame...The Esprit came in a molded Fender case that fits absolutly perfect, the Flame came in those retangle black cases and they just purly suck...Himges are screwed, the quality of the case is BAD I mean, I wouldn't like to drop it with the guitar in it let alone tour with it...The other case on the other hand is perfectly strong and has stood up to everything...

Oh, also, saw an 80's strat ellete or something like that (active electronics and 3 push buttons instead of a 5 way switch) in one of the music shops I go to and it was origionaly sold with the same crap rectangle cases that my Flame is in so I think they weren't just for the Masters series, but more like a generic fender case that was designed to hold mutiple models...I'd be interested to know what my Fender case with my Esprit is as I've seen them with other esprits sold and it looks (from memory) exactly like the one my D'Aquisto's being sold to me in (also the origional case)...Was there 2 lines of cases they sold them with mabey?...

My esprit's case is shaped and arched on the top...Pefect fit and when you open it it has (on the underside of the lid at the bottom end of the guitar) a stripping of material with the fender logo's repeated on it like those fender straps you see and like I said, mine isn't the only one I've seen with Esprits...

Yes, there were a few different cases used for Master Series guitars. The form-fit you describe has red interior lining.
Believe it or not there were actually a few different rectangular cases made and used. I have one which is a bit deeper than the others, so maybe there were a few different production runs, possibly a few different manufacturers involved. I agree that the rectangular cases are very poorly designed, but I have one or two which are like new, and I completely trust them. I do have one of the 'red' ones also, and it does seem to do an adequate job. Any case is good if it will do it's job...

Ahh...Ok...

Tell ya though...I'd trust my form fit case much more than the rectangle jobbie...Put too much presure on the rectangle jobbie and it caves in...You can put MUCH more presure on the form fit and it won't budge...Good thing too as afew things have fallin' on mine in the past, but...no damage...
