The older the violin

In the past month I've sold two Alvarez-Yairi guitars. And I gave an old Alvarez away, as mentioned in another thread.

That leaves me with just three acoustics: an old Guild, a Goodall, and a Martin. All three are great guitars, I'm lucky to have them.

I also sold a Genz-Benz acoustic amp, leaving me with just my Roland AC60. My music room is looking pretty bare, but I like it.

I must say it feels rather liberating to have downsized, especially with winter coming on and with it the need to stay on top of keeping everything humidified in this extra-dry climate I live in.

Three feels like a good number. I guess we'll see about that.

Good for you!

I'm in the same downsizing process (with both acoustics and electrics). But I'm trying to get "down to" around 8 acoustics (!) and 10 electrics.

[**Most of the electrics I play are lefty Warmoth's that I've built. I also have a Yammy 335 style that is incredible...if that's all I had for electrics I'd be fine. Oh, and a bass.**]

As I'm getting older (now 61) I'm playing and enjoying more acoustic, and am enjoying several Martins for the most part (also a couple Larrivees). Still a couple Martin's on my "Want-to-try" list, and being a lefty, that's problematic - it usually means I have to order one.

But the right (left?) three guitars should be able to keep a guy happy...

I did not mention my one electric guitar, a homemade Telecaster. Good guitar, but I rarely play it these days.

I've actually lost count of what guitars and amps I own. It's crazy but I live in a lousy local market and I hesitant to list them for sale online. When I was young, I had a Strat, a Yamaha dread, and an unremembered name classical. Oh, and one amp - a 1954 Fender Super. Boy, I sure miss that one.

CG, I assumed that I would have a tough time selling that stuff because I live in a town of 3,000 way up in the mountains. Not a great market.

But I wrote a nice Craigslist ad for the G-B amp, with a lot of photos. Took about 10 days, but some guy from Glenwood Springs called, asked some questions, and then drove 200 miles round-trip over the Continental Divide. He was delighted with it, and took it home.

And then I listed the first of the two Yairis, and some guy from Denver made the 220 mile round-trip to buy it. He sent me a text a few days later to tell me that he loved the guitar. So I mentioned Yairi #2, which I had showed him while he was here, and shot him a really good price. And since I was due for a Costco run anyway, I told him I would meet him in the Denver Costco parking lot and save him the drive. He jumped all over it, and he now owns my two Yairis.

The used guitar market is really flat right now. So if you want to sell something, you have to price it right (as in cheap). All this stuff was stuff that I was no longer using, so I priced it to move and it did. Easier than I expected.

Craigslist can be a PIA, and for both items I was deluged by the idiot scammers, but it worked for me. The scammers are easy enough to spot/ignore/delete.

Yeah...we're 3 miles from the closest pavement. So it is difficult to sell stuff locally; especially if it is high-quality/high-dollar stuff. Just another reason to not overdo the acquisition of "stuff"...whatever it is.

"The used guitar market is really flat right now"

Very true including here in SoCal. Many guitars and amps have been listed on local CL for years. Granted most of those sellers are asking more than they will ever get.

I need to do some downsizing and expect to sell at significant losses. That's OK. I've enjoyed the heck out of those guitars/amps.

Yeah, Viera, I see crazy prices all the time, rather amusing.

Way to go, Ragtop- post a thread about downsizing, and then hit up FDPers about selling their guitars to you.

Clever strategy!
