Am I the last to know about this?

When I sold a guitar earlier this week, the buyer wanted to meet in a public place somewhere between his house and mine. I thought he was just taking my word that the electronics were good, but he had one of these to test the guitar. I had no idea that they existed, and didn't think it sounded great; but it seems like a good idea for checking a guitar's working condition without requiring either party to have strangers in the home.

Years ago I met a guy to sell him an amp I had listed on CL. He brought a power inverter. He plugged that in to his car and plug the amp into it and fired it up and played a chord on his guitar. Smoke came out of the inverter. He bought the amp.

I have a Rockman X100 from the 80s that I used to take to test guitars. It runs on AC power or eight AA batteries. Super handy for this sort of stuff.

There are a bunch of small headphone amps available these days (Vox has one that seems quite popular -- link below). Yeah, they don't sound great, but that's not what they're for.

You could do the same thing with a Roland Microcube running on batteries.

Link added!

@ Leftee - that's a great story!

It would have been even funnier if he had played the first three chords of Smoke On The Water!

I’ve got a collection of off road amplifiers, including an early leather covered Pignose.

I’ve built a few based on the Pignose and other circuit boards. I put together a battery with inverter and charging system that will run my Fender Rumble 40, my first Class D bass amp.

I use the Vox headphone plug to check out function. Keep it in my tool box.

Roland Microcube for me. Works great and you can get some volume.
