For tire kicking purposes and because of some lingering dissatisfaction, I took my mint condition 2017 Fender American Pro HSS to Guitar Center to see what I could get for a trade-in.

I was offered just a little over $500! I told the clerk that "you'd have to be an idiot to accept that offer."

I may buy a different neck for this Strat off of the Stratosphere. (I don't care for the narrow-tall frets on the Am Pro.)

Selling outright is almost always better than trade-ins. That holds true for both cars and guitars.

Their math is: it’ll sell for half of list, so we’ll give you half of THAT. Overhead, blah blah.

Unless I need money for groceries or an eye operation, I’d rather give it to a kid learning to play than feed the corporate beast.

A guy at work bought a $50 used Epiphone acoustic at the local GC. It's a newish model and currently sells new for $149. My biggest question was, "What did they pay the initial owner? $25?"
I suppose if he/she were buying a big ticket item ($1100 Les Paul?) they might go to $40?

mroulier - You'd have to be really desperate to sell something so cheap, like you need to eat or put gas in your car. Definitely sad to be in such dire straights.

GC used to buy at 60% of what something would sell for new.

The other thing that bugged me as they didn't consider the condition when figuring out what they'd offer.

Sometimes people didn't used to care - I think they had a policy where they'd give you an extra 10% off a new item if you sold them a used one.

Take a total bath on a cheap pedal but get $300 off a LP.

I think that's why my gear pile is so high.
But to be fair it isn't just GC. It's pretty much any store.
I can't get past the idea of paying top dollar then losing that much when I try to turn it over.

Years ago I bought an amp head and cab at GC for $400.
A few years later I sold it back to them for $500.

It’s no wonder they had to close so many stores!

It’s Mikey’s fault.

How much would you pay for a used one?

Yea, that doesn't seem bad for an offer honestly.

I see a couple up in the 800-900 used range asking.
