So we are finally going to sign up.

Dumb questions.

Any reason to download the app to a computer versus just the phone?

Will it work in Europe?

Credit card security?

Any general advice?

We just returned from three weeks in Europe and were surprised at how few uber and lift cars. Taxi still very predominant. BTW no uber or lift in Venice.

Unless you carry your computer with you when you're out and about, it's going to be difficult booking an Uber/Lyft or changing an existing reservation.

Makes more sense to have it on a DumFone than on a laptop/iPad/etc., because you always have it with you.

The only reason to download the app to a computer is if you wanted to hail a ride from your desktop and I can't see the need myself. No issues with card security, or drivers, or anything. We use both Uber and Lyft and find them generally equal overall but at any given time one driver might be closer or offering cheaper rates, so we usually choose at the time of need. I can say that I have preferred dealing with rideshare drivers and their vehicles over most taxicabs that I've used. So, cheaper, faster, easier, and more pleasant is why this is a thing now.

Before you leave for Europe tell your bank and credit card company to assure they don't think charges are fraudulent.

"Any reason to download the app to a computer versus just the phone?"

If you carry your computer with you and can operate it from the sidewalk, yes. ;-)

"Will it work in Europe?"
I use it everywhere I go. There are a couple of cities still stuck in the 20th century that won't allow it, but those are getting rarer and rarer.

"Credit card security?"
As robust as you'd expect from any major corporation, which means not 100% secure. That is why you should use credit cards, and not debit ones for this kind of thing.

"Any general advice?"
It really is no big deal, just start using it.

I've used Uber 3 times now, once in Detroit and twice in Houston. It is great. I only have the app on my phone. Select your destination, you will be given an ETA by the driver, their name, their license plate and car make, user ratings, cost and a GPS map showing their location. You can message the driver with specifics ("I'm curbside at ground transportation in green shirt"). When transportation is done you can rate and tip the driver through the app. So far every driver has been great, the only minor issue with one that clearly spoke very little English. But that's about 95% of every cab driver out there, so...

I have only used Uber and Lyft while on vacation. Honestly, if they didn't exist, I would have just called for a taxi. But it was definitely much easier, especially on the way back to the hotel where I had to make my arrangements form the road. Every time, the car has been there within 5 minutes or less, they've been clean, one guy was even a New Yorker and we chatted about stuff from home.

If you hold aside the drivers that will murder you and hide the body, it's a very good service.

I Lyfted my family all over Las Vegas last week. Cheap, fast and had pleasant, informative conversations with courteous drivers, unlike the avg Travis Bickle-like Taxi driver.

The App should lead authorities quickly to your body, what with GPS/driver name/make, model and plate number.

Ha! My major hesitation up until now has been admitting
that we might NEED a ride somewhere. I guess the kids use it more than geezers.

We used it quite a bit in Paris.

I use it at home to get to places where parking is a hassle. An example would be going to Hawkeye football games. Much easier to Uber than to drive down, fight nasty traffic and pay $25 for a parking spot that's a 20 minute walk from the stadium.

Public transportation in major European cities is amazing and cheap. Even in Venice the motorized water bus (vaporetto) and taxi are fast and run on schedule. The hop on hop off buses allow you to reach the important places without being part of a guided tour group.
