Just getting a spacecraft to an asteroid 180 million miles from Earth is something.

Orbiting it ... even better.

Landing on it, not once, but twice, and then shooting a "bullet" into it, to break loose inner material.... kinda spectacular.

And now, by all accounts, a successful mission of gathering those materials.

The final step of bringing those materials back to Earth is currently underway.

When that spacecraft delivers its samples from the interior of asteroid Ryugu at the end of the year, "they could possibly give us a glimpse into the solar system as it was right after the Big Bang.
Think of them as a sort of portal that will take us back in time some 4.6 billion years."

Oh ... and Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May was involved in creating stereoscopic images of the asteroid. How cool is that?

Anybody else thinking about the Andromeda Strain after reading this? Could they be bringing back the some rogue alien who was sentenced to the asteroid for crimes against the galaxy? Otherwise, pretty cool.

Amazing!

"the creation of an artificial crater on April 5, when the probe smashed a copper weight into the surface of the ancient Solar System body."

I guess they will find some copper on the asteroid :-).

Pretty amazing ! A fascinating journey to send the Falcon to the octahedral magical palace of the Dragon King and return with a message.

You can't get much cooler than that !

Or can you ?
