I just started rehearsing with a guitar player that tunes down a half step. I hate playing with a drop tuning on my bass because it requires a complete change to the set up of the instrument and gives me a floppy feel on the B string of my 5ers. A friend plays in two groups that each use a different drop tuning and has utilized using a Digital-Tech Drop pedal to maintain standard tuning on his axe and work with both groups without altering his bass. I listened to his rig last night and felt the Drop pedal did an accurate/flawless job.
My question would be if I can insert that pedal in the effects loop of my preamp or do I have to run it direct to the preamp input jack?

Is there a reason you want to run it in the effects loop? I'd bet the pedal does a lot of "calculating" using harmonics and if you have any extra grit from your preamp it might not track as well.

Yes, I’d like to use it in the effects loop because my rig is hard wired for wireless using George L cabling and adding that box would require a complete re-wire of my rack.

The manual says the Drop wants to be first in the chain.
Don't know what you've got for a rig, but I split my pedalboard ( for guitar) with some pedals going into the front (OD, Dist, Boost) and others through the FX loop (Reverb, Delays, Time-based FX).
If I were using the Drop, I'd go first pedal in the chain (after my tuner) into the front end of my amp.

Where I got confused is this from the owner's manual: "5. Output Jack
Connect this jack to the input of an amp, input of the next pedal on your pedalboard, or the effects
return of an amp effects loop."
It says to plug instrument to Input jack but nothing about send from effects loop

I really didn't need to know that this pedal even existed.

Yeah, I can see how that's confusing and I didn't see that when I looked at it the first time.
Maybe they're presuming:
1) Not using any other pedals - in which case you can go directly into the return, instead of the front end, bypassing the preamp.
2) If using other pedals, you'd likely come out of the send and into them anyway, then into the front end. (like I described with my time-based fx)
This is all guessing on my part, but agree the manual is pretty vague.

Mick, me being a bass player I have no other pedals. My tuner is on a direct tuner send from the preamp.
By the way, my rig is an Aguilar DB680 preamp into a Crown K2 power amp. It’s old but absolutely kickazz for a bass rig. One way or another I’ll come up with a way to make it work...I don’t want to de-tune my Lakland.

I'm not a bass player (not even a bad one) but knowing Crown, I imagine that would sound great!
"...I don’t want to de-tune my Lakland."
Yeah, I would think that could get real floppy. Especially on a fiver!

Thanks for your input Mick, I see you’re an Aussie. I have a very good friend from Bundella, New South Wales. He’s not a musician but enjoys a pint or two every now and then.

There's not a whole to do out that way *but* drink!
Beautiful country though. The Warrumbungles are pretty impressive.
Also, I'm a transplant. Originally a New Englander, but lived in Oz for 20 years.

I ordered a drop pedal today. Our singer says he can do some Led Zeppelin if we tune down a full step. We're not doing that.
But with this pedal.....I may be playing some LZ in an actual band for the first time. Starting with "Rock & Roll" in G. ;)

This pedal is great! Thanks for turning us onto it, Laker!
I found a cool trick to do with it, set the pedal up to drop a few half steps down, then do a fast repetitive meedley meedley type guitar lick. Hit the pedal occasionally while you're doing your fast lick. Very cool effect, and the on/off switch engages so easily, you can switch back and forth very quickly, if so desired.
I call it "how to confuse the guitar players in the crowd". Lol

For anyone that's interested, my Drop pedal came in and it works great running it in the effects loop of my WTX500 Eden practice amp. Either direct in or effects loop gives me the same results.

Interesting, good to know that it works either way. For me, it's one less cable putting it into the front of the amp. ;)
Working with a new band last night, several songs were in flats. I just use the pedal to tune down a half step, and adjust accordingly. Not that I have to, but it makes life easier.
Did I mention that this pedal is great?!
